Ryan Leslie's new interview with Drink Champs is full of wisdom on owning your audience, how he introduced people to his music as a barber in college, & more. Here are 4 of my favorite takeaways: 1) Creating a testing ground for his music This was probably one of my favorite moments from the interview - Ryan shares the story of how when he attended Harvard University for college, he worked as a barber to make extra money on the side. As his classmates came into his dorm for a haircut, Ryan would use their presence as an opportunity to play his music in the background and introduce people to it. He would ask for feedback from people who were getting their haircut, with that positive reinforcement ultimately giving him the confidence to pursue music as a career. The story is not only an awesome example of creating an environment to get feedback on your music, but introducing people to your music in real life in a creative way. 2) Sometimes the universe reroutes you When talking about how his laptop got stolen many years ago, Ryan shares how a hold was placed on his bank account and he wasn't allowed to withdraw money - his funds were essentially frozen. The inability to access to his own money encouraged him to transfer his funds to Bitcoin very early on in the cryptocurrency's existence. That investment would pay massive dividends as the price of Bitcoin has since increased tremendously over time. What started as a financial hinderance turned into a financial blessing. 3) Owning your audience This one is no surprise - one of Ryan's claim to fame in recent years is building Superphone, a platform that allows creators + artists to capture the phone numbers of their audience and communicate with them directly, similiar to an email list. Ryan shares the success of building his own massive list and how he used that data to sell tickets, understand who his fans are, and communicate with them directly. 4) Understand the game you're playing Ryan identified the game he wanted to play and went all in. Instead of trying to play the streaming game (there's nothing wrong with those who do, by the way) he made a conscious decision to go direct to his fans and monetize that way. Part of what contributed to this success was being one of the first celebrities to use SMS texting and market himself as giving his fans access to his phone number. Brands, I've said it before and I will say it again-- do not sleep on the Substack chat. So much meaningful activity is happening here. Thought for the Day: Missing the Seasons “What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.” - John Steinbeck I’ve lived in Florida for close to two decades. It’s home to me and for the most part I love being here. However, this is the time of year where I miss being in the mountains, foothills, or just about anywhere north of here. This is the time of year when fall arrives. The leaves have changed colors, there’s a coolness in the air, you know that winter is soon on its way. I love the fall. I also love when fall turns to winter and there’s a fresh frost on the ground. I like seeing my breath on a cold morning. When those cold mornings give way to the warm afternoon sunshine and flowers start to bloom, spring has arrived. Finally spring makes way for summer and there’s warm days that we longed for during winter. I love the seasons. Here in Florida, those seasons are non-existent. It’s really hot for about ten months and then it cools down a little bit for the last two, only to quickly get hot again. Here, we never get enough time to really appreciate something else. When it comes down to it, that’s what I love most about seasons. They are long and different enough to make you appreciate the rest of them. When it’s really cold in winter, you appreciate the warm summer days and when it’s hot in summer, you’re thankful for those cool fall mornings. We need different experiences. We need change. It’s only when things are different that we can truly appreciate that something else. We need highs and lows. We need good and bad. We need change and stability. All of one thing would dilute the value of having that thing. If you’re in a season that you don’t particularly love, that’s ok. It’ll only make you better appreciate the next season.

Whether you're trying to get a manager, get staffed, or sell a show, your TV pilot sample needs to be firing on all cylinders. This means it needs to accomplish all 7 of the following things: #1 - Establish the concept. #2 - Show us the world. #3 - Introduce the characters. #4 - Launch the Central Dramatic Question of the Series and/or Season. #5 - Tell a self-contained story with a beginning, middle, and end. #6 - Fulfill the promise of the premise. #7 - Do it all within 35 pages (for a comedy) or 60 pages (for a drama). If you are writing a pilot because it seemed easier than writing a feature, you have made a terrible mistake! *** Once your pilot script is doing all these things, only then should you start querying managers! Whether you are in the event business, or another profession, today is a new day. You’ve endured and survived all of your toughest days so far. Use those scars and lessons to face what comes next. Today is a new battle, and tomorrow will be as well. Use the challenges of the past to help you overcome the challenges of today. We live life one day at a time so focus on today and let the future take care of itself as it comes. Although always preparing for the future, I always try to focus on the current event I am working. If I get too focused on the event 6 months from now, I’m not giving today the attention that it needs for me to produce my best effort. I’m always trying to be the best I can be. Some days I am pleased with the result, some days I am not, but as I look back over the years, I know I am better today than I was in the past. I also know that my favorite part of growing and improving is helping others. Serving. Encouraging. Seeing and helping develop talent. Mentoring. The best part is doing it with no agenda other than helping other people grow. Giving back. Sometimes it opens me up to hurt and disappointment but the rewards far surpass and difficulties. WEDDING TIP: if you know your crowd rally wants to dance the night away...consider cutting your wedding cake immediately after dinner, but before your First Dance. This will eliminate the need to stop the party and clear the dance floor in the middle of the event. In addition, this will also present another opportunity for you to thank the guests for coming or have 1 or 2 more additional toasts while everyone is seated. The cake can now be served as dessert with the coffee and the photographer can capture these moments and segue right into the First Dance.
