Here's how you can cultivate workplace empathy through emotional intelligence as an HR professional.
Leading by example should be a given for HR professionals. However, mastering the art of empathy, especially when dealing with complicated employee relations issues, is a learned and necessary skill that takes practice! To create an empathetic work culture, my organization partnered with a third-party consultancy to provide a series of company-wide training seminars focused on the Platinum Principle: Treat people how you think they want to be treated rather than how you would like to be treated. Applying the Platinum Principle took our commitment to inclusion to a new level. It is incredible to see the practical tools everyone learned used in everyday meetings to resolve conflict and show compassion to others at work.

Balancing service quality and cost-effectiveness is tough. How can you boost employee morale in the process?
The pandemic has intrinsically changed our relationship with work, especially for knowledge workers. The challenge is convincing leadership of this tectonic shift while still finding ways to prove that hybrid working arrangements improve productivity, not thwart it. Productivity should be about results regardless of where the work is done that gets it done. Too many employees are convinced that a traditional in-office workweek is unnecessary for them to perform at their highest level. For many, the opposite is true. Companies embracing hybrid work where warranted use trust as a means to practice what they preach when they say the value work-life balance.

Balancing service quality and cost-effectiveness is tough. How can you boost employee morale in the process?
A top goal of mine has always been to create and foster a feed-forward organization. Sure, feedback is after the fact, but feed-forward feedback given immediately where warranted is a deliberate commitment to team growth and development. Coaching becomes less scary, more honest, and more helpful. If the whole organization is on board, everyone can look forward to hearing how they performed knowing it's a sincere attempt to help them improve professionally. A simple tool such as "Like Best, Next Time" gives anyone, but managers in particular, a way to underscore what someone did well and constructively guide them towards improvement without demoralizing them in the process.
