???? Christine Lagarde’s #Sintra speech I found the speech dovish in subtle, but meaningful ways. Overall, my reading is that it conveys a clear posture to #cut - a great deal clearer than the June press conference and somewhat contrary to some of the more hawkish council members - and an increased alertness to downside risks. 1?? Explicit reference to a #softlanding being desired. “Given the magnitude of the shock to inflation, a “soft landing” is still not guaranteed.” This, per se, is not new news – it is obvious they should want to avoid a recession – but it’s a further step in departing from the attitude of “we will do what we have to do”. 2?? Almost there on #inflation. Above-target inflation is now seen as a mere “risk” (“it will take time for us to gather sufficient data to be certain that the risks of above-target inflation have passed”). This of course rules out July (not really news imho) and consistent with the staff projections, but to essentially say “we just need to make sure” means they essentially consider the job is done, with only some residual uncertainty. This is in contrast to some of the hawks, who have been more cautious on the balance of risks still recently. 3?? Affirmation of #easingbias, more alert to downside #risks. “The strong labour market means that we can take time to gather new information, but we also need to be mindful of the fact that the growth outlook remains uncertain.” The first part of the sentence says that there is no big hurry, but that the general posture is to #cut. The second part is interesting in that (i) it’s a juxtaposition with the first part, so it’s about the limits to waiting to gather new information, and hence (ii) the uncertainty is essentially a reference to downside risks to growth – for example from ????. #ecb #lagarde

Banks will want to read Travis Hill’s speech given at American Enterprise Institute yesterday. Travis provides valuable insights as a key player in the middle of last year’s crisis and response. Believe his comments on regulators’ need for real time data on deposits are right on point. And his views on brokered deposits are particularly relevant since the FDIC Board is scheduled to vote on brokered deposit rules next week. Jessica Dickler, CNBC. Americans owe $1.12 trillion on credit cards, with the average balance at $6,218, an 8.5% increase year-over-year. Rising prices and interest rates have increased financial pressure, especially on young adults. Credit card delinquencies are up, with 8.9% of balances transitioning to delinquency. Serious delinquencies are at the highest level since 2010. Better late than never... I did a major LinkedIn spring cleaning this week, and let me tell you, I went DEEP into the "unread messages" folder. We're talking way back to 2017, unearthing messages from awesome people I met at events like SOCAP Global, SXSW, American Public Media Group, and more. Long story short, I decided to reach out, and WOW, am I glad I did. As a VC and startup coach, I'm always banging the drum about the power of social capital for founders. And let me tell you, this "unread messages" outreach is a GOLDMINE! ?? Here's the thing: Everyone I messaged, even after 7 years, was incredibly warm and welcoming. Massive shoutout to those folks who responded, scheduled calls, and even offered help (without me asking)! This experience solidified my belief in the power of LinkedIn for founders. It's never too late to build connections, and the potential for collaboration and support is truly inspiring. Can't wait to juice my network even more on May 21st at United We Transform. Headline: CEO includes himself in layoffs/ a RIF. After an amazing 3.5 years at Dwolla, I made the difficult decision to put my role in last week's RIF as we redesigned our org chart around a strategic pivot to the recently announced "Connect" product. While the right strategic decision for the business, it was incredibly painful to see so many talented Dwollans impacted through the RIF. I've never had so much confidence and optimism in the future of Dwolla, and will consider my time there as one of the highlights of my career. To past and present Dwollans, I love you and can't thank you enough for the trust, loyalty, hard work and friendship. Y'all flipping killed it ??. I am a better person and leader because of each of you. I've got your back now and forever and will be cheering you on. Can't thank everybody enough for their support (clients, investors, bankers, board members, etc.), and consider myself lucky to have been part of this journey with you. I'll be heading to Costa Rica for a few weeks to ???♂?, meditate, journal and get my six- pack back, before slowly working on "what's next." No doubt there will be some board roles that I've been putting off, and looking at some cool FinTechs/SaaS/Payments companies. I feel incredibly blessed to be able to take some time, and know many (most) people don't have that luxury. To all impacted by the brutal layoffs and RIFs the last 24 months in tech, hang in there. I know the pressures and stress can feel crippling at times as you find yourself suddenly back in the market. Working with LLMs has made me a MUCH better manager, and not for the reasons you might think. A key aspect of effective management is delegation, and I used to be horrible at it. I promise I’m not exaggerating - I’m sure former colleagues would back me up on this ?? The root cause: I didn’t understand how to translate my vision for a job to be done into instructions. I’d assign a task with a vague writeup, and a week later my team member would come back with an output that missed the mark. As a result, I often found it easier to do the work myself. When working with ChatGPT or Claude, I get instant feedback on how clearly I’m communicating my objective based on how well the AI completes the task. If I didn’t get the output I was expecting, I know I need to refine my instructions and try again. I’ve gotten hundreds of reps using these tools, and in the process I’ve gotten much better at clearly articulating my goals. Now, when assigning a task to a team member, I have a deeper appreciation for the value of a clear, detailed writeup. When I clearly communicate an ask, it helps my team perform the task more effectively and results in much better outcomes. Delegation is a key skill for any leader, and it can be improved with practice. LLMs are a killer delegation simulator that can help us collaborate better with our (non-robot) team members.

Is mouse movement a good measure of productivity? Checks my notepad I still use daily: no. The world of work is weird and there's always nuance in any situation. That said, companies need better measures for their people than just how much you move your mouse. Outcomes based measures like those recommended by experts like Brian Elliott are a great place to start. #work #workplace #technology

A very thought provoking newsletter from John Mauldin, highlighing the dangers of fiscal profligacy of current times. The previous CBO projections released in February 2024 were already grim and the latest ones released this week are outright scary. John has highlighted the key causes of such fiscal developments and their implications in the coming years. He has also given some useful references from a very insightful book titled “This Time is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly” written by Carmen Reinhart and Kenneth Rogoff - a must read. "Our immersion in the details of crises that have arisen over the past eight centuries and in data on them has led us to conclude that the most commonly repeated and most expensive investment advice ever given in the boom just before a financial crisis stems from the perception that 'this time is different.' That advice, that the old rules of valuation no longer apply, is usually followed up with vigor. Financial professionals and, all too often, government leaders explain that we are doing things better than before, we are smarter, and we have learned from past mistakes. Each time, society convinces itself that the current boom, unlike the many booms that preceded catastrophic collapses in the past, is built on sound fundamentals, structural reforms, technological innovation, and good policy." - This Time is Different (Carmen M. John is one of the two people I consider to have been a mentor during my career. I worked with him for less than three months and will drop everything I am doing to share a beer with him, and I know he will answer my call at any point to give me advice. I've learned untold tactical advice from him, and he's helped me mature and grow immensely; but what I can give you for free is the two most important learnings I have from John Hill: 1. Your network is like your 401(k), you need to invest in it before you need it. Meet others relentlessly, and try as hard as you can to provide value to them. At some point you might need or want something from them, and withdrawls are much easier when you've made deposits. 2. Assume good intent. Conflict happens, and when you disagree with a colleagues actions you should consider their perspective and also consider that they likely believe they are taking the most rational action.

I recently had the pleasure of catching up with Seth Patton GM of Copilot at Microsoft for a fireside chat on ‘Modern Work infused with AI’. Our conversation was timely, with it coinciding with the release of Microsoft's 4th Annual Work Trend Index report. Of note, this years report is the first since AI became a mainstream topic so naturally I was interested to understand from their vantage point how AI was beginning to play an increasingly important role in Modern work across their customer base and with in their own organisation. Here are a few of my takeaways: ?????????????? ???????? ???? ???? ?????? ????????: despite expectations, email volumes haven't decreased, and post-pandemic meeting levels remain high. ???? ???????????????? ???? ??????????????: per work trend survey, 75% of knowledge workers are now using ai, with 46% of this adoption being in just the last six months. ???? ????????????: is helping reduce some of the human load, by synthesising and processing work related information, thereby removing some of the admistrative overhead and instead allowing people to focus their time on more creativite aspects of their roles. ?????????? ???? ??????????: are real and centre on cyber, dlp, privacy and IP infringement to name a few. Organisations need to tackle the route cause of BYOAI head on and implement secure enterprise grade AI capabilities to address workers needs. This inevitably means having to fully democratise this capability to both buy down on the risk, and so you don’t limit your most important assets.. your staff. ???????????????????????? ??????: and building the case for a tangible ROI can be challenging, the observation is this may be causing some to stall on vision execution. Value often comes through 'flow velocity’ i.e. increasing speed of creativity and delivery overall. But this can take time to evidence. I???????????????? ???? ????????????: to maximise the benefits of these investments you really need to spend time in upskilling and training the organisation to create AI digital dexterity.
