“The stores require a maniacal focus on the customer experience" Fewer people are going to Starbucks every day. Their F24Q2 results caught the financial world off guard. Same-store sales decreased by 4%, driven by a 3% decline in traffic. The quote at the top of this post is from Howard Schultz, their former CEO. I agree with him, their store experience these days is a mess. For the entire back half of my career, I had a dual role. On one side I was running daily operations. On the other, I was responsible for process improvement and continuous improvement. Poor execution will destroy a product, while stellar execution will elevate a mediocre one. But don't take my word for it. Take Steve's (Jobs) "Ideas are worth nothing unless executed. They are just a multiplier. Execution is worth millions." What I appreciate is how Starbucks is looking to address these issues. They aren't looking for some magical piece of tech to solve their problems. They know that a digital quick fix is nothing by snake oil. This is their plan 1) Review and revamp the process. Mobile orders have destroyed their ability to manage cafes during peaks 2) Implement their Siren Craft System. An internally developed targeting operational improvements and enhancing the efficiency and throughput of Starbucks stores 3) Improve customer experience with a deeper focus on product availability and adjustments to the mobile app (they are working to improve the estimated wait times of orders) 4) Continued product innovation, while respecting the needs of the core coffee business. Out of all of the things they are doing, this one is my favourite: Strategies to reach occasional and non-Starbucks Rewards customers, including exclusive in-app offers and making Mobile Order & Pay available more broadly. I like this because it's going after something that isn't easy. Finding that "moveable middle" is HUGE opportunity to increase customer lifetime value AND potentially create more raving fans (something that once served them exceptionally well). Walmart Is Rallying To Bentonville. Relocating Employees And Cutting 2,000 Corporate Jobs Fresh off impressiving quarterly earnings, news broke later yesterday that the retail giant is making structural changes. Employees from Atlanta, Dallas and Toronto are being told that they will need to relocate to keep their roles. Other cuts are a result of the Walmart business model that has changed. No information was released with respect to what types of roles. It feels like Walmart is follwing a lot of other major retialers and tech companies, re-establishing their in-office requirements. Are they leveraging the power of their brand in order to lock in the best talent? What are your thoughts? DAY 13: Canada Post Strike We are approaching THE PEAK. Next week will be the busiest time of the year for retail, fulfillment, and shipping companies. In this environment, if the largest shipping company is on strike, it is not a good sign for retailers, SMBs, or customers. 📫 Canada Post / Postes Canada holds roughly 20% market share in Canada’s parcel market, the largest share, closely followed by Purolator and UPS Canada. 📦 Over 10 million packages have been impacted so far, and 1.5 million packages/day could be affected moving forward. This is huge and risks creating gridlock in backend supply chains (3PL, warehousing). 📦 Most competitors have the “sort capacity” to process additional volume, but “delivery capacity” is nowhere close to supporting this additional volume. 🏬 Companies are encouraging “In-Store Pickup,” which is actually a bright spot for them, as it will drive more traffic to the stores. Expect busier malls. Lastly, who ends up bearing the cost of all this? It’s YOU, the customer. We have Demand > Supply. Competitors are charging more $$$ → More cost to the shipper → More cost to the customer! SMBs are taking a hit too! There is no winner here! #CanadaPost #Strike #Canada

Good Morning & Happy Monday, Friends! 🚨 Attention DTC brands, online retailers, FBM Marketplace Sellers, Subscription-Box Organizations, and 3PLs/eCommerce Fulfillment companies shipping international mail & parcels - the United States Postal Service will begin accepting mail and packages bound for Canada beginning today, Monday, January 6, 2025! 🚨 "The USPS said in a statement on January 3, 2025, that Canada Post had made “significant progress in clearing delayed volumes caused by their employee strike, and now commercial and retail customers, as well as those using online systems, will be able to send mail and packages to Canada once again,” beginning on the 6th." ⚡ eCommerce Bytes wrote a short OpEd on the news and included the following statement: "The fact that Canada’s mail was at a standstill for such an extended period of time, and that it came during the holiday shipping period, appears to be unprecedented in recent history, when so many now rely on online delivery." This is great news for those shippers who couldn't pivot to DDP ship methods during the strike and have parcels sitting on either side of the border waiting to be processed and delivered. Personalization IS NOT About Customization. Are More Retailers Finally Starting To Get It Right? I advocate all the time for the additional revenue you can drive for your business through your operational execution and the customer experience it helps you create. For too long, a lot of retailers thought that personalization meant: • Generic emails using your first name • Basic products with a chosen feature or add on • More sku choices It's not. Personalization is about status. That's what connects for our brains. To either have something that few people have, or to be able to bring something to the group that no one else did before. Walmart is taking a strong step forward, offering early access to deals and features through its Walmart+ program ... about time. But here's the thing that everyone needs to keep in mind. The easier you make it to get in, the more you reduce the value of the offer. This is why the added features of Amazon Prime are losing their luster. No one wants to have what anyone else can have simply by paying $9.99 a month. True personalization comes from deep segmentation and the discipline to live by those boundaries. I shared a few weeks ago in my newsletter how I would use a similar framework to reduce retail returns. No matter how good you get at processing them, until customers have a better benefit, they won't change their behaviour. What are your thoughts on "personalization". Think I'm out to lunch?
