In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, hosted Alicia Mitchell, a Cherokee Nation member and Director of Tribal and Government Relations at AISES. Mitchell’s presentation highlighted AISES's mission and the impactful partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). This year’s theme, "Affirming Native Voices: Visibility-Leadership-Service," reflects the Corps' commitment to recognizing the value of diverse backgrounds in strengthening its workforce and community impact. During the event, Mitchell discussed AISES’s initiatives aimed at expanding STEM education and career opportunities for Indigenous communities. She emphasized how USACE can contribute to enhancing visibility, promoting leadership, and fostering service among Indigenous professionals and students in STEM. In 2022, USACE and AISES signed an agreement to open doors for Indigenous people to engage in opportunities with the Corps through job fairs, career days, and access to labs, projects, and research. This partnership aims to address the projected shortage of STEM professionals, with 3.5 million STEM jobs needing to be filled by 2025. Mitchell also discussed how the Corps' commitment to visibility celebrates the rich history, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous peoples. Leadership, a key focus of the event, acknowledges the enduring impact of Indigenous leaders and inspires future generations. Service, which is central to USACE's mission, honors the contributions of Indigenous peoples in military and public service, extending to education and workforce development. As the partnership between USACE and AISES continues to grow, the event underscored the importance of collaboration, innovation, and inclusion in achieving shared goals.?

Congratulations on a impactful event at #cop29 to our partner The International Land and Forest Tenure Facility! For more info and a link to view the session, see below.
???What is the way forward to secure forest tenure rights for Indigenous Peoples and local communities as part of the climate and nature solution? Yesterday’s joint event,?"Finding the Path Together,"?co-organised with NICFI - Norway's International Climate and Forest Initiative, at?#COP29, brought together inspiring voices, powerful stories, and key insights on making meaningful progress. From the transformative potential of the?$1.7 billion Glasgow Pledge?to on-the-ground successes and ongoing challenges, here are some highlights: ??? David Kaimowitz: "We as an organisation, are very proud to have been part of this process and to have channeled $26 mln last year to Indigenous and local organisations in grants. ????Hege Ragnhildstveit: "Most of the growth comes from the funders behind the pledge but interestingly we also see that other funders that are not yet part of this 25 funders' family have also increased their funding. This shows us how important the pledge has been in terms of elevating the importance of forest tenure security for climate and nature goals. More and more funders are recognising that." ???Sinea Wapichana Do Vale:?"The resources we receive, we know how to use them to strengthen the rights of Indigenous Peoples. We need direct and clear financing to be able to continue these actions." ???Helen Magata:?“We are pushing for a dedicated arrangement for Indigenous Peoples to access financing directly. There has been an exercise by the Green Climate Fund and GCF's secretariat to review the entire GCF portfolio, and we discovered that 30% of the portfolio is being implemented in Indigenous territories. However, there is no framework or indicators to track and disaggregate how much funding Indigenous Peoples are actually accessing." ???Ode Rakhman: "Trust-based and rights-based is our spirit. We’re using a simple and flexible management approach. So far, we have already supported about 157 IP & LC initiatives. It’s our responsibility to see how we can improve the quality of life of Indigenous Peoples and local communities, impacting around 50 mln people." ???Torbj?rn Gjefsen: "What the Path to Scale dashboard does, confirms the story that funding is increasing overall and that the pledge is working. What is equally important is to highlight the stories from the ground that demonstrate improvements in livelihoods. I’d like to take the opportunity to give one small example: the people living in voluntary isolation on the Peru-Brazil border. It has a?highly intact forest and the highest concentration of Indigenous Peoples living there. Rainforest Foundation Norway and local organisations have been documenting their existence, mapping the lands that they live on, and helping them advance legal recognition. Since the pledge, over 2 mln hectares on the Peru side have been recognised. It’s a massive result of collective work.” ???Missed the session? Catch up at 6:30:20 https://lnkd.in/dd3kxTgz

Our partner People of the Sacred Land has been doing incredible work in Colorado inside of their Truth, Reconciliation, and Education Commission with the goal of restoring justice to Indian People in Colorado. "It isn't doing land acknowledgments. It's about restoration. It's about restoring land. It's about helping us protect sacred sites. It's about trying to find ways to maybe bring these people home." - Rick Williams, President of People of the Sacred Land. CBS reported on their efforts yesterday and we are happy to be able to share this story and ask for you to join us in sharing it. As Rick Williams said, if Indians are ever to see any justice, they'll have to rely on the goodness of people. #Landrestoration #NativeColorado #Peopleofthesacredland #IndigenousPeoples #NativeAmericanHeritage https://lnkd.in/gJtMSNyT

?? Today, at #COP29, we launched an urgent Call to Action to protect the land tenure rights of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in tropical forests and to advance direct financing as we look towards a new financial pledge for IP&LCs. This Call to Action, initiated through the Platform to Support Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in Forest Climate Action - part of the @Forest and Climate Leaders Partnership - brings together governments, donors, and Indigenous Peoples organizations like the Global Alliance of Territorial Communities (GATC) for 4 urgent priorities: 1?? Clear national commitments in NDCs to recognize and protect IP&LCs territories. 2?? Accelerated legal recognition of land tenure rights. 3?? Respect for Indigenous rights and traditional knowledge, including Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC). 4?? Ambitious, transparent, and direct financing designed in collaboration with us - Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities. This collaborative effort builds on the $1.7 billion pledge made at COP26 and sets the stage for ambitious, rights-based climate action. We urge governments, donors, and partners to join us in advancing this Call to Action and securing a sustainable future for Indigenous territories, tropical forests, and the planet. ?? Yesterday at the Advancing Forest Tenure Rights event, Indigenous leaders, the UK government, and major philanthropies united to strengthen support for forest tenure rights and direct financing to Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IP&LCs)! GATC speaker Buba Balkisou joined UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy to raise ambitions for advancing direct funding to IP&LCs as we move towards 2030, with discussions on a second phase of the Forest Tenure Pledge in the lead-up to COP30. The UK government announced that £3 billion of its recent £11.6 billion climate finance pledge will go toward nature, with £1.5 billion explicitly earmarked for forest conservation. Minister Sonia Guajajara (Brazil’s Ministry of Indigenous Peoples), Andrew Steer (President and CEO of the Bezos Earth Fund), and Hans Brattskar (Norway's Special Envoy for Climate and Forests) emphasized the importance of aligning more funding with territorial realities and increasing land titling for IP&LCs. The Forest Tenure Funders Group also launched its new report, highlighting that $1.34 billion—79% of the $1.7 billion pledged in 2021—has been disbursed, with 10.6% reaching Indigenous-led initiatives directly. While progress is substantial, more efforts are essential to ensure the majority of funds reach Indigenous-led financing mechanisms. Since the Pledge’s launch, the Global Alliance of Territorial Communities, through the Shandia Platform, has championed reshaping financial systems to benefit our communities. Today, we reaffirmed our commitment to work with governments and philanthropies to direct more funds into the hands of the world's true guardians. With these resources, we- IP&LCs- will continue our ancestral role in defending ecosystems against growing threats. ?? The Forest Tenure Funders Group (FTFG) Annual Report 2023-2024 is now available! This report shares our progress toward meeting the $1.7 billion COP26 Pledge, supporting land tenure and forest guardianship for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPs & LCs) in tropical forest regions. Highlights from this year: -79% of the pledge disbursed: With $1.34 billion allocated, we’re moving closer to our goal for 2025. -Direct funding on the rise: $55 million (10.6% of total funds) went directly to IP & LC organizations, a substantial increase from prior years. We know this is still a lower figure than many of our IP and LC partners would like to see and must work to ensure more Pledge resources reach communities directly. -Expanding networks: The number of IP & LC organizations receiving direct funding grew from 39 in 2022 to 100 in 2023. Focus on gender and youth: For the first time, we’ve collected detailed data on gender and youth-focused projects, which make up 11% and 2% of funding, respectively. The report provides insights into our achievements, ongoing challenges, and strategic focus areas, with case studies on the inspiring work of IP & LC partners. Will you be at #COP29? If so, join our partner The International Land and Forest Tenure Facility for this event to map out a path for strengthening land tenure security and forest management rights for Indigenous Peoples and other forest-dependent communities in tropical regions. If you won't be there in person, there is the option to join online.
?? We’ll be at #COP29, alongside NICFI - Norway's International Climate and Forest Initiative, to tackle a challenge that is both urgent and vital. Indigenous and rural communities protect millions of hectares of forest—yet only 11% of these lands are formally recognized as theirs. Despite growing awareness and the positive impact of the past Pledge, there’s still more to be done, and we’re here together to move it forward. ??This event will bring together Indigenous leaders, government representatives, and philanthropies to map out a path for strengthening land tenure security and forest management rights for Indigenous Peoples and other forest-dependent communities in tropical regions. We’ll celebrate key milestones in the recognition of these communities’ collective, traditional stewardship of forest lands, and underscore their essential contributions to addressing the twin crises of climate and biodiversity. Join us in Baku or online as we work alongside Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendants, and local communities to secure land rights and support their essential role in safeguarding planet’s climate and biodiversity, guided by their own vision for the future.
