Welcome to this week's Fruitionary Spotlight Snippets! Today we’re highlighting Pivot Bio, a model synthetic biology company that designed a custom microbe that gives farmers the tools to tackle eutrophication: Eutrophication is one of the most detrimental problems our planet faces. Every year 50-60 percent of nitrogen fertilizers seep into our waterways, causing large algae blooms that are decimating these vital ecosystems. Using Pivot Bio’s “nitrogen on seed” process, farmers have reduced their use of these fertilizers by 25 percent. Their “nitrogen on seed” technology utilizes proprietary microorganisms that work with the crops, attaching directly to the roots. These microorganisms extract nitrogen from the air and supply it directly to the plant, circumventing the need for “loose” nitrogen from fertilizer which is subject to environmental factors, such as runoff or volatilization. This process is paving the way for a more sustainable future in the agriculture industry. In 2022 they were in use in 2 million acres of corn, in 2023 they increased that number to 5 million acres. They are included in Fast Company’s 50 most innovative companies and ranked second in sustainability. 2023 marks the fourth consecutive year of growth for the company. Pivot Bio is also expanding its manufacturing ability with two new facilities that are meeting the growing demand for their product. To learn more about Pivot Bio's innovative process, visit www.Pivotbio.com. If you’re an innovator in biotech looking to share your story, connect with us at www.Fruitionary.com to be featured in an upcoming spotlight!

The critical role of light in the growth of crops, particularly cucumbers, and outlines the research conducted by Wageningen University & Research (WUR) on the impact of different light spectra on plant morphology, assimilate distribution, and resistance. The university has established a dedicated research facility, the LED Innovation and Demonstration Center (IDC LED) in Bleiswijk, to simulate winter conditions throughout the year in four compartments. The aim is to generate new insights into the effects of light on high-wire crops, enabling growers to optimize energy-efficient cultivation practices tailored to their specific conditions. The study reveals that light spectra significantly influence crop resistance to diseases and pests, with hormones playing a crucial role in mediating these effects. Given the challenges in directly measuring hormones, WUR focuses on examining gene expression, which is regulated by hormones. Different light spectra can activate or deactivate multiple genes in the crop, often leading to opposing effects. For instance, one gene may stimulate cell elongation while another suppresses the process. Interestingly, the research indicates that while the effect of light spectra on crop elongation and associated genes is relatively small, there are noticeable impacts on plant resistance. Specific spectra have been found to enhance resistance to thrips insects. Although there is a slight decrease in biomass production, the targeted use of light spectra holds the promise of more sustainable cultivation practices, as it reduces the need for crop protection measures. ?
