For Jennifer Juarez, one of the beautiful things about her Latino identity is its complexity. As she put it: “There isn’t one simple answer for how or who can identify as Latino/a!” #mlaglobal #hispanicheritagemonth #culturalheritage

I recently appeared on the podcast Dialogues in Afrolatinidad with host Michele Reid-Vazquez, Ph.D. to discuss my personal and professional experiences as an AfroCuban-American, Mariel Boatlift refugee, and daughter of one of the first Palo Mayomberos in Rochester, NY. The first part of the podcast takes a lighter tone, focusing on my journey navigating schools and social life as a young Black Cuban girl in a predominantly Puerto Rican community in Rochester. Later, we delve into the more serious topics of Cuban human rights violations and the subversion and repression of Afrocuban culture. Drawing from my ethnographic research in Cuba, I explored how state control threatens cultural preservation, specifically targeting AfroCuban historical traditions such as banning Black societies. We also examined the July 11th movement, where Cubans protested for freedom, yet AfroCubans remain marginalized, even within broader calls for justice. A major theme was the neglect of AfroCubans within global race activism, where their unique struggles are often overlooked. I also discussed the need to dismantle the notion of Afrolatinidad as a monolith—AfroCuban experiences are distinct and deserve recognition. I’m currently working on a book that will explore these issues in greater depth, focusing on how human rights violations and cultural subversion intersect in Cuba, and how we can better advocate for AfroCuban voices. We wish you a happy and safe Juneteenth! Juneteenth is an annual observance on June 19 to remember when Union soldiers enforced the Emancipation Proclamation and freed all remaining slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865. This day is an opportunity for people to celebrate freedom and equal rights in the United States. On June 19, 1865, freedom finally came for the 250,000 enslaved people of Texas. That day, which would become known as Juneteenth, the Army arrived to enforce what had already been the law of the land for two and a half years — the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, we recognize that Juneteenth not only marks the end of America’s original sin of slavery but also the beginning of the work at the heart and soul of our Nation: making the promise of America real for every American. ?????????????? The Juneteenth flag consists of a rectangle. The lower part of the rectangle is red and the upper part is blue and it has a solid white, five-pointed star at its center. The star is surrounded by a white outline of a 12-pointed star. The Juneteenth flag is often displayed with the United States flag to symbolize that slavery is illegal. In Texas and some other southern states, the traditional drink on Juneteenth is Big Red soda. This variety of cream soda is a sweet, soft drink flavored with orange and lemon oils and vanilla. It is available in different flavors and with or without caffeine and sugar. #iPS #iPSSelect #JuneTeenth #freedom #history #celebrations #FreedomDay #EmancipationProclamation #JuneteenthCelebration #Equality #History #BlackHistory #Freedom #LiberationDay #RememberingHistory #CelebrateFreedom #JuneteenthObservance #EndofSlavery #EqualRights #FreedomForAll #EmancipationDay #RecognizingHistory #MakingAmericaBetter

As we commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, I reflect on the intertwining of histories, both as a Jewish person and an ally of the Hispanic-Latino community. The deep-rooted connection between Jewish and Hispanic-Latino communities spans centuries, from the Iberian Peninsula to Latin America. Historical ties date back to the vibrant cultural life of Spain and Portugal, where Jews coexisted with Christians and Muslims. Following their expulsion, Jewish communities found new homes in Mexico, Brazil, and Peru in the 16th and 17th centuries, contributing as traders, diplomats, and pioneers. In later centuries, Jewish migration to Latin America surged, driven by persecution and the aftermath of the Holocaust. Argentina now hosts a significant Jewish population, while Mexico's community has influenced the nation's culture and politics, recently celebrating the election of its first female Jewish president. The fusion of Jewish and Latino traditions has created a rich cultural tapestry, showcasing the resilience and adaptability of both groups. By honoring our shared past and contributions, we celebrate the enduring respect and collaboration between Jewish and Hispanic-Latino communities.
