? Nikon Unveils Integrated DED System and 3D Scanner for Precision Component Repair ? Nikon has launched the Lasermeister LM300A, a directed energy deposition (DED) machine, and the Lasermeister SB100 3D scanner, designed to function together for efficient component repair. The SB100 scans a component and automatically generates a tool path for the LM300A, a process crucial for refurbishing various industrial equipment such as turbine blades and mining equipment. This DED technology, traditionally used by companies like Sciaky or Optomec, is especially valuable for repairing costly turbine blades and expanding in sectors like oil and gas for surface wear applications, with Nikon claiming up to 65% reduction in lead times. The system stands out for its precision, comparing scanned components against original CAD models and offering inspection capabilities post-repair, with claimed accuracies ranging from 0 mm to +1.5 mm. It supports materials like Ni625, Ni718, 316L, Ti64, and Ti-6Al-4V within a build volume of 297 x 210 x 400 mm, and allows for the addition of custom materials. Nikon's enclosed system offers advantages over traditional, open DED systems by integrating scanning and printing into one workflow, improving data management and accuracy. The company also touts surface roughness values of less than 20 microns, potentially reducing the need for post-process machining. However, the system's build volume limitations may restrict its use for larger components, leaving room for competitors. Nikon's proposal to pair the DED system with a grinding or milling system could provide a more complete solution, capitalizing on Japanese expertise in these areas without necessarily excluding other partnerships. With Nikon's background in metrology, the company is well-positioned to offer a more comprehensive DED solution that integrates data analysis, metrology, and machining, potentially setting a new standard in the industry.
