What an honor to host 30 brilliant students from Prep for Prep with Cara Bain, for a career workshop focused on “Assembling the Building Blocks for a Fulfilling Career;?Strategically identifying your skills and passions when thinking about your career path.” We played an interactive game of life-sized JENGA, with each puzzle piece containing questions driving students to think strategically about their skills and passions, address the fundamentals of career development, understand the value of mentorship and networking, and how to acquire the tools requisite for success as each student embarks on their own career journeys. The dialogue was INSPIRING and we were blown away by the motivation, thoughtfulness, and career mindset that the students displayed as they are already thinking about their career trajectories, how to marry their skills with their passions, and how they can start assembling the building blocks and laying the foundation for for fulfilling and successful careers. These students are destined for greatness and are already shining bright. It was a privilege to spend time together. Had the privilege of mentoring three recent graduates this week as they embark on their early careers. Here are my top three takeaways from our conversations: 1) Gen Z is incredibly intelligent, hardworking, and entrepreneurial. Their ability to seek out work they believe in and feel connected to is truly inspiring! ?? 2) There's no single "right" answer in your career path. Having diverse skills and interests might make it harder to pinpoint the perfect starting role, but it's excellent preparation for our unpredictable, ever-changing world. ?? 3) If planning the next five steps feels overwhelming, slow down and focus on one step at a time. Taking that first step doesn't mean you'll fall off a cliff; it means gaining valuable experience that will serve you well. ??♂? There's nothing more inspiring than seeing the future through the eyes of today's college students. Eric Obeng and our founder, Joselle Deocampo-Gautam, both proud #Batesies, had the privilege of guest lecturing in a Bates College business course aimed at helping students succeed in the professional world. They shared career insights with a room full of ambitious, inquisitive, and young professionals. They discussed how to chart career paths, leverage LinkedIn to stand out and get hired, and network to get ahead. The future is bright when you take charge of your path with confidence, determination, and a plan! Go for it! If you're a new grad, starting your career journey, or pivoting careers, these three takeaways are timeless: ? Be persistent and consistent. Success often comes to those who stay the course. ? At our kick-off meeting, our students learned some valuable reminders: Be Bold: Whether it’s shaking a hand or stepping up to present, practice going first. Confidence matters! I coach exceptionally bright undergraduates at Pembroke College, Cambridge Despite studying at one of the world's best universities, all my young clients lack confidence in themselves and their ideas. This isn't just humility - an essential quality when you've only just become an adult. When I ask them what they think and why, they reason very well. And they're open to reflection and reconsideration in a way that's mature and nuanced. But this competes with a story in their heads that they're not good enough. So they hold back from speaking up in lectures, supervisions, committees and internships. That story doesn't magic itself away when they graduate. Having worked with and supported capable new graduates for years, I can tell you this: They will enter the workplace with the same doubts and anxieties. Amplified by the power dynamics they are hyper aware of now. What if I ask a stupid question in a meeting? What if I'm obviously not good enough to make it through my probation? What if I get let go and have to find a new job, while I'm paying through my nose for rent? A recent graduate told me her generation feel expendable. That's awful for them and it's also a serious problem for you as their manager. Let's think about how this filter affects your working relationship: They're more likely to: - Work long hours in secret to try to catch up: which makes it hard to budget projects properly - Hold back good ideas that you could really benefit from slowing progress and making life harder than it needs to be - Keep quiet about problems until the last minute then you're suddenly having to pull long hours to pick up the pieces.. apologise to clients and partners or smooth things over with other affected teams What else would you add? It doesn't matter if you're nice. You need to accept the power imbalance between you and work hard to counteract it. If you want help with this, I'm bringing together a small group of managers and senior leaders at the end of this month to brainstorm ideas. Last week, I had the privilege of speaking as a panelist at Tenacious Thursday hosted by the East Texas A&M University - College of Business ?? ?? ?? To say it was an inspiring experience would be an understatement. The room was filled with so much energy, passion, and ambition—it reminded me of why I’m so committed to sharing my journey with others. What stood out to me most? Taking the chance and betting on yourself. Whether it's related to networking opportunities or applying for the seasoned roles and competitive internships too often, we second-guess ourselves and hesitate to seize opportunities because of fear or doubt. But here's the truth: You miss 99% of the chances you don't take. ?? As I shared my story, I couldn’t help but think of all the moments where I almost didn’t take the leap… and how glad I am that I did. Growth only happens when we push past the unknown, even when it feels uncomfortable. Huge thanks to the East Texas A&M University - College of Business & Shernay Irving , M.S. (Wormley) for giving me the platform to connect with students, professionals, and fellow leaders like Vince Arnold, CISA, CISM, CISSP Kelly Poquiz Burke , Chris S. & Courtney R. Brazile.
