"Stupid"* question: What are *new* risks in Meta using our content for AI training, compared to those we already face by using FB or Instagram? We've had quite the discussion at home this morning and reading their "AI at Meta" information didn't clarify much. You obviously have the privacy invasion, misuse of personal data and potentially copyrighted content, lack of transparency, loss of control, chilling effect, wrong assumptions etc. But all these are already issues with using Meta services. Isn't using our personal data for AI training just another problematic processing activity? Does it "justify" deleting our accounts, more than the ongoing issues? Isn't it just more misuse? But maybe the last drop for some, to finally take the step to delete their accounts. ? I'm not one of them, for very personal reasons. I just can't delete my FB account, as it's linked to the account of someone who's not here anymore. Deleting my account means removing that last link... and I'm just not ready for that, yet. It's easy to tell people to "just get off the platform"—it's just not that simple, in practice, for many. * "STUPID" QUESTIONS: So many people tell me they're hesitant about participating in the public debate, including here on LinkedIn, because some other people are quick to reprimand and ridicule them. If that's the case, block them. And we need "stupid" questions for a *better* public debate! ?? by ChatGPT prompted with "create a realistic image of a sad person being exploited by bigtech's misuse of their personal data to train AI" #RiesDPOHub #gdpr

J?rgen gives a great example in his article here (only in ???? but use in-browser translation)—in my words: ?? centralising all the data brings a higher risk for breaches with much far-reaching consequences (ID theft, phishing, spam etc.), compared to only having them on different platforms (FB, Insta). https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/skal-du-tillate-generativ-ki-blir-trent-p%25C3%25A5-dine-data-jorgen-ulvan-moe-fqc3f/

Ref. my prior post on immediately objecting to their AI training + ?? recent reports suggest you must write a more solid objection for Instagram as they've started to reject some! https://www.dhirubhai.net/feed/update/urn:li:share:7199451905838706688/

I think asking what ARE the risks is not enough. The bigger problem is what MIGHT be the risks in the future, especially given that opening this door (misuse of the data to train AI) means opening the did also to other future use cases. There will not be much in the way of preventing them from doing much more with the data at any point, or at least it will be much harder. Also, it’s not only about the risks. It is a societal value in Europe that we put the person at the center, and either give them a direct choice re who has data about them / what they do with it, or we ask for the intrusion into that persons life to not be disproportionate (the other legal bases are not relevant here). There is no risk consideration into this, but rather the reasonable expectations of the individuals and the impact of the processing. It’s the concept itself of a fundamental right - “The processing of personal data should be designed to serve mankind” says GDPR.

You raise pertinent points. I deleted my account almost a decade ago but it was after a few failed attempts to break up with Facebook, so I know exactly what you mean by not being ready yet. For me, it was keeping in touch with home. I wrote about it too if you’re interested: https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/why-privacy-advocate-facebook-sofia-carroll?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_ios&utm_campaign=share_via

Having read through the notification, the privacy notice and the various additional links referenced throughout - I am lost. How can they expect any non-privacy person to understand this ??

No one should ever be peer pressured into using it not using a platform. Know the risks and make the decision yourself.

Leaving fb, is also off boarding a lot of interesting information sharing groups and parts of one's loosely couple social networks. So it will be a loss. But in my view the biggest loss will be on those numerous smaller groups, organisations and companies relying on fb as their customer or member platform. They will loose the effective and cheap communication and marketing platform that they have grown used to. They will have to reconsider comm channels and how they spend their marketing budget.
