New Regulations for Satellite TV Channels in India The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has announced new guidelines for satellite TV channels and teleport operators in India. Here's a quick breakdown: - IN-SPACe Authorization Required: Starting April 1, 2025, TV channels will need authorization from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) to utilize foreign satellite capacity for broadcasting services. - Grace Period: Existing arrangements with foreign satellite operators for C, Ku, or Ka bands can continue until March 31, 2025. - Application Process: Indian entities like subsidiaries, joint ventures, or authorized representatives of foreign operators must submit applications for authorization through the IN-SPACe website. Current Scenario: - NewSpace India, a public sector undertaking, currently leases transponder capacity from both Indian and foreign satellites. - As of March 2023, India relied on a mix of domestic and international satellites for communication, with 70 Ku-band transponders and 1.6 GHz of HTS capacity leased from foreign operators. Broadcasters also directly leased 40 C-band transponders. Impact: - This move aims to promote the use of domestic space infrastructure and potentially increase India's self-reliance in the broadcasting sector.
