Transformational work is not necessarily instructional work when it comes to masculinity. You cannot create a culture that makes room for transformation that does not include space for people to arrive and exist as they are. Yes, there is deeply needed, incredibly pertinent work that needs to occur with young men. However, I believe that the "work" cannot commence if it is initiated from a position of defense. Expert perspectives are extremely useful. Yet at times, the expert voice can supersede the voice of those you are directly trying to impact. It can come across as "judgy" or "shaming", which ultimately increases the likelihood of disconnection and engagement. Young men need to be spoken WITH, not just at. They need to feel like they have something to contribute, because they do! Even if it challenges the ideas you wish to plant and cultivate. You cannot create a culture of change if you don't cultivate consistent opportunities for safe, explorative, patient discussions. Today, I stumbled upon a thought-provoking line: “If I let go of who I am I become who I might be.” This sparked a reflection on the impact of our identities on personal development. Our identities, crucial as they are, can sometimes hinder our progress. Stepping back from the labels we attach to ourselves can unveil a wealth of new perspectives and opportunities for growth. While our identities shape us, they can also confine us. For instance, clinging too tightly to a specific identity, like gender, can inadvertently limit our potential due to stereotype-threat. This psychological phenomenon can hinder performance across various domains. We know so little about the human mind that we need to be cautious in terms of how we are defined. I urge you to consider: Which identities might be obstructing your view of the bigger picture? Whether tied to age, gender, experience, self-perception, or something else, shedding these labels momentarily can reveal a realm of untapped possibilities. Take a moment to reflect on this and observe the transformative power of letting go of preconceived identities. In the 1960s, psychologist Stanley Milgram’s experiments on obedience demonstrated how individuals would follow authoritative directives, even when they conflicted with personal morals. Understanding peer pressure is crucial in the workplace. It can lead to positive outcomes, such as increased team cohesion, and negative ones, like unethical behaviour or burnout. HR professionals can harness the positive aspects by creating a culture encouraging ethical behaviour and mutual support. To manage peer pressure effectively, organizations can promote a culture of integrity where ethical behaviour is rewarded. Training programs on moral decision-making and creating safe channels for reporting unethical behaviour can help.
