The recent incident of the minor being filmed while threatening his Principal has brought up a lot of conversation around children's development and rightly so. However, we at Child Safety at Work, a vertical of Equilibrio Advisory LLP also find it important to spotlight the response of a stakeholder to an unprecedented situation. It is imperative that Educators handle their duties of disciplinary matters with confidentiality and care when minors are involved. While it may be second nature to film situations in order to protect oneself or document any incident, we question the motive to share these clips exposing the child to online trolling and longer standing impact as their identifying details are shared without consent. Here are a few things to keep in mind while reviewing video clips containing children: ??Institutions must identify those who share videos of minors without consent and take disciplinary action. ??Staff should be trained on the legal and ethical implications of sharing such content. This training ensures educators understand the importance of protecting children’s privacy, wellbeing, and responding appropriately to these issues. ??Sharing identifiable information or recordings of students must be prohibited - as it can result in unintended consequences, including public shaming and psychological distress. ??In the case where certain footage is required to be reviewed it must be done by the disciplinary committee identified only. Addressing misconduct should focus on guidance, support and corrective measures rather than public exposure. This would include also being able to connect a child to trained therapists or counsellors to support emotional and mental wellbeing ??Preventative steps must be taken - to create space for dialogue with children, safe spaces where they can understand their emotions and build healthy coping mechanisms. #palakkadincident #teachers #caregivers #childsafety #childsafetyatwork
