Trader and Consultant

Many standard TOC solutions rely on the key principle of aggregating volatility. I especially like how this is portrayed in Eli Goldratt's book, Isn't It Obvious? Such an elegant solution for managing retail inventory! But the book got me really excited about something else... how these ideas could apply to trading! It's a deep source of new insights. This article introduces the concept and some of the ways it can amplify your trading results.

Seraphim Larsen. Excellent thank you. I think you said this, but I want to check. You stated that: "Just like with Paul's store, if you can reduce the amount of cash locked up in inventory, you can..." And then your examples were frequency-based. In Paul's stock-based system, he actually created "space" on his existing shelves to stock new (different) items that people (didn't know they) wanted. In your example you do more trades - right? As an aside I always see demand driven replenishment (and any sort of hierarchical network) as (1) cooperation, (2) specialization - reducing variability to you, and (3) innovation. Innovation is the step-wise increment that comes AFTER the other two. Going the other way, you can't have (step-wise) innovation without the prior aggregation or specialisation, and you can't have those without cooperation. I'm quite willing to state that TOC does not understand this. This is a different 3-step to what you have (but then I have a set of 4 of these 3-steps so that's not an issue) but it does inform how I parse these problems, and I find them immensely useful. But thank you for taking the time to put this together.

One of the best books by Goldratt and not so much talked about. Isn't Obvious? brings elegant solutions from simple common sense thinking that we can all appreciate without too much effort.
