Emotions influence how we think, behave, and relate to others – when overwhelmed, they may take over and colour our perception and experience of a moment. They also serve to indicate what outcomes or hope we hold dear or what needs are emerging. ? When experiencing overwhelm or challenging emotions, pausing to reflect on the question "What is it I am feeling right now" can be helpful. While instinct may drive us to avoid or push away the emotion, we need to allow ourselves to feel and explore it. Naming the predominant emotion, one is experiencing may create space to breathe for a moment, understand it and identify what is causing the emotion to show up. We may also be able to see how the emotion may be impacting our responses. This can support us to build emotional awareness and boost emotional intelligence, make healthier choices, and respond to stressors constructively. It may further support a person to identify if there are emerging needs that may require us to reach out for professional support. When challenging emotions are regularly suppressed or ignored – it can bring in deep impact - mentally, emotionally and even physically. This impact can be seen influencing the quality of one’s relationships, work and all other aspects of life. So, practice that intentional pause and ask yourself – “What emotion is showing up for me right now?” [Emotional Regulation, Emotions, You matter, Mental Health is important, Mental Health Matters, Mental Health Reminder] #emotionsmatter #mentalhealthatwork
