Love this. Google DeepMind is now opening access to WeatherNext, an AI-powered forecasting model that’s faster and more accurate than traditional physics-based weather predictions. Why’s this a big deal? Because weather forecasting is one of the hardest problems in science — it’s chaotic, data-heavy, and small errors get amplified fast. Traditional models rely on raw physics and supercomputers crunching equations for hours. AI, on the other hand, learns patterns from historical and real-time data, making predictions in minutes, not hours. There are two models: ? WeatherNext Graph – A single, precise forecast for when speed and efficiency matter most (announced back in 2023). ?? WeatherNext Gen – An ensemble forecast that maps out multiple possible scenarios, ideal for tracking storms and extreme weather (announced in December). This is great for many reasons more than just whether or not to grab an umbrella — it could also improve disaster response, grid reliability, and even food security. Since the GraphCast paper was published, we've had so many #EarthEngine users asking how they can bring these highly-accurate, low-energy consuming and thus more sustainable, weather forecast models into their analyses.
