???Exciting News: MyGigsters has raised $1.1 million in seed funding!??? But This post is not (just) about that. It's about the “prequel”.? It kinda starts on Friday the 13th, March 2020, when Benje Benjemen Elengovan and I were in a rooftop bar at Flinders Lane asking, “can we have 2 Corona (beer) please?”, when that 'joke' was still funny – at least to me. We’d worked together for about a couple of years by then (including a startup). We had a chat about the gigs we did from college times esp as international students. It was fascinating to see how similar our struggles were: navigating a new country, striving to build connections, making ends meet and so on. Having done lots of it, we know the flexibility offered by gig work is undeniable, yet it often comes with challenges, especially regarding financial security.? A lot of decisions in my adult life centred around “retire at 40-45”.??And through that, learnt a trick or two about relationship with money.??Benje had too!? We felt we could “do something” to create a paved path for gigsters, make them financially secure. There was an idea! Several moons later when we got the opportunity to explore this topic with LaunchVic, MyGigsters was born!??This journey has been interesting, to say the least! We pivoted a few times in search of PFM: accumulated some scar tissues in the process. We worked for countless hours in search of that magic 3 letter acronym (PFM), so much so that “Swami uncle” was part of Benje’s then 2 year old daughter’s vocabulary ;)??Through all these pivots though, I am proud that we never changed from our mission. At MyGigsters we've always been proud of our principle on conscious capitalism. At a distance, the startup journey looks all glitzy! But it takes so much grit to play the game.??Benjemen Elengovan left his well-paying corporate job to head up MyGigsters in early 2022. Since then, he has changed 6 houses, 3 visa types, co-found 3 other startups and became a father again. Both he and the unsung hero, his partner, Ishwarya Rao did all this with a smile on their face. As glad as I am about our “History channel”, the future, our “Discovery channel” excites me even more. We take our share of learnings from the journey so far and are moving ahead with our mission of creating a financially secure gig workforce! Uncle Dele is the true definition of assurance. We moved a lot because of Baami's job; each new place brought excitement and uncertainty. Yet he was always there, a steady presence. I don’t think he is my uncle, perhaps a close friend of my parents, I’ve always known him as Uncle Dele but in my mind, he is my uncle regardless. They say it’s the smallest things that impress children but a moment of kindness can last a lifetime. Uncle Dele was never just a moment of kindness, he was a lifetime of kindness. His visits were something to look up to. Whenever he visited, he brought my favourite chewy caramel candy, Goody Goody. He will hide them in his shirt pocket and tell me to look for them.
