There are no words to fully capture the profound impact these relentless winds and raging fires have had on Los Angeles. The devastation defies comprehension. Entire lives have been upended—homes reduced to ash - businesses, cultural landmarks, and schools lost - the natural beauty of our landscapes scarred beyond recognition. We can detail the destruction in numbers, describe the weather conditions fueling this nightmare—dry air, fierce winds, cool temperatures—or list the countless agencies working tirelessly to bring relief. We can tally the thousands of brave responders on the ground or calculate the staggering costs of recovery. Yet, none of it can truly convey the heartbreak and resilience of our city in this moment of unimaginable crisis. Now, more than ever, Los Angeles needs us all. These X-Men drawings continue to teach me that faces are super hard to draw. This will be the final update and shoutout for May! I owe a huge thank you to our most recent donors. Thank you so much to Cassandra Cheung, Connie La, Tracy Kirchner, Nicholas Baitoo, LCSW, Kenny Azama, and Chelsea F.! You all are so amazing! Unless something miraculous happens today, it looks like we will be ending May $1785 short of our goal. That still means we raised $3215 together this month, which is incredible! Who knows, maybe a flood of donations will come in today and we will hit the May goal after all. Tomorrow we start on our June goal of $5000 plus what we didn’t get in May. That will be our last full month of fundraising, and then July 1-19 will be spent trying to raise as much as we can on top of the previous three months goals. As of this morning, 126 individuals have contributed to this amazing cause. That is about 230 fewer than in past years. I know a lot of folks are not in a position to give this year, or are prioritizing other very worthy causes, but I’m hopeful this means we still have a lot of growth potential. If you have been meaning to give or if you are considering it for the first time, today is a fantastic day to do it. The past week in Los Angeles has been heartbreaking. The fear, the fires, the devastating losses - it’s hard to put into words. As we hit the one-week mark, one question keeps coming up: How do we as a business community move forward while fires rage and so many around us have lost everything? Robert Frost said, “The only way out is through.” Moving forward means walking the delicate line of rebuilding lives while sustaining our community and economy. Conferences like IMN Winter Forum and ALIS are moving forward, bringing much-needed revenue to our hurting city. At the same time, I’ve seen incredible efforts from the hospitality and CRE industries to support those in need. Restaurants like Red Bird and hotels like the JW Marriott LA Live are stepping up to raise funds, offer services, and provide a sense of normalcy amidst the chaos. Local heroes - our firefighters, first responders, and organizations like World Central Kitchen - are working tirelessly to help those most affected. So, how can we be sensitive to our own pain and others’ losses while moving forward? By showing up in every way we can. Donate to vetted GoFundMe pages or World Central Kitchen. Support local businesses, go to events, and tip generously. Thank a firefighter or first responder. These small actions are how we stay strong together. Supporting LA Fire Victims As a native Californian, watching the devastating fires in Los Angeles has been incredibly hard and completely unfathomable. The loss, the destruction, and the heartbreak are overwhelming. What’s even harder is seeing the situation politicized when what people need most right now is immediate help. The fires have left many families displaced and entire communities in desperate need of support. #LA is one of Charitybuzz’s homes. It’s where some of our team members live, where we have an office, and where we’ve built countless friendships and partnerships. In response to the losses sustained by the arts sector due to Hurricane Helene, the N.C. Arts Council has developed a grant category for nonprofit arts organizations located in the impacted region.
