A very insightful interview with Jaeda S., one of the many women who are breaking stereotypes and shaping the future of the maritime industry. Jaeda emphasises that women's diverse perspectives, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail are essential for enhancing maritime safety measures. It's encouraging to see that the contributions of women are increasingly recognised and valued across various roles, from captains, and electricians to engineers. Acting as catalysts for change, women significantly contribute to the development and improvement of robust safety protocols, training programs, and risk management strategies. As mentioned by Jaeda, together, women can chart a course towards a safe horizon, shaping the future of maritime safety. #shippingindustry #genderequality #genderintheshippingindustry

I'm thrilled to say that the International Maritime Organization WISTA International 2024 #WomenInMaritime survey is now open for both: IMO Member States as well as organisations active in the maritime sector. This survey should take a person who is familiar with an organisation's HR about 20-30 minutes to fill out and captures information about the gender and age breakdown of a company's workforce, information about leadership and also the policies in place to support diversity. The survey runs until the end of this year and the information captured will be used to create a report that can be freely downloaded by anyone via the IMO and WISTA websites. Data from this survey will provide clear metrics to identify gaps, track improvement and allocate resources (including money and guidance). It's also a great way to celebrate those that are getting it right - both at sea and on shore. Diversity in Maritime has come a long way in the 21 years that I've been a part of this industry and I'm thrilled that my team at Intent Communications Ltd is working with IMO and WISTA to roll out this survey, provide support and crunch the numbers for what I know will be an insightful report. As someone who was frequently the only woman in the room at events towards the start of my career, I firmly believe that the positive change I've experienced has been because of the hard work and efforts of individuals and organisations that have remained committed to increasing #diversity and #inclusion. I'm glad to be one of the many people working towards this shared goal. Please make sure you take the survey and share this post to help more people participate. #WomenInMaritime2024

This is a rather important survey that the International Maritime Organization and WISTA International are conducting and I would like to invite all my network from #shipping and #logistics to answer this short questionnaire. Answers from both Men and Women in the industry are welcome. Lets provide some useful insight that will show us where we stand today. It’s pretty easy and doesn’t take long to complete. Change comes only with our contribution. #wista_international #imo

The second global Women in Maritime Survey is being conducted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in conjunction with the Women's International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA International ). The data provided by the survey will assist in creating programs and proposing policies that will increase the participation of women in the maritime sector, thus supporting the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Bahamas Shipowners Association (BSA) is a firm supporter of initiatives promoting diversity and inclusivity in the maritime sector. In this context, the BSA reminds its members to take part and promote the survey. The Women in Maritime Survey opened in September and will run up to December 2024, while the final Report will be published in May 2025. ?? And the UN Annual Forum on Business and Human Rights is over for another year!?? It has been great to see old friends and meet many new ones, and we feel energised by the conversations we’ve had, helped by plenty of Swiss ??. Key takeaways from Day 3 included: ?? Mandatory human rights due diligence (HRDD) is a gamechanger. But it’s not a silver bullet. Work remains to ensure guidance and transposition into national laws provides clarity and consistency for companies; countries will need to invest in implementation to ensure new laws are effective; and companies should reflect deeply on what meaningful stakeholder engagement means in practice. ??HRDD must take an intergenerational perspective – including giving specific consideration to impacts on younger and future generations, particularly as part of the just transition. ??Indigenous peoples’ rights require specific focus in the just transition including to ensure renewables and transition minerals projects achieve and maintain free, prior and informed consent and empower Indigenous communities including through innovative partnerships. ?? Technology including AI has a key role in creating a rights-respecting global economy - but embedding HRDD in technology development and deployment is crucial to ensure it is focused on and designed to solve critical issues, advances decent work, and does not drive human rights abuses. ?? A smart mix of measures will be different in every context, but will achieve better outcomes when it considers all stakeholder perspectives including rightsholders, civil society, government and business, and reflects on what has and has not worked in the past. ??There are significant opportunities for building human rights risk management in a collaborative, pre-competitive space. This can support better and more efficient management of human rights risks and improved outcomes for suppliers and workers. Belinda Christine Borck gave a great presentation on Tony's Chocolonely’s collaboration efforts in the final session which you can watch online: https://lnkd.in/ddzWukxH ?? The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) brought coherence, clarity and pragmatism – and underpinning today’s smart mix of measures with the UNGPs will help ensure these elements are also reflected. A highlight too to see Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Ambassador Lynn Bell, Australia’s Ambassador to Counter Modern Slavery, People Smuggling and Human Trafficking, speaking in the final session. The Forum had over 3000 attendees. It provided an important opportunity to learn about and discuss emerging trends, and as usual allowed for building relationships within and across stakeholder groups. A big thank you to the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights and the secretariat for all of your efforts in convening and organising the Forum. #bizhumanrights #esg #susty
