AI has the potential to change all of our lives.?? ? It can speed up planning consultations to get Britain building, help drive down admin for teachers so they can get on with teaching children, and feed AI through cameras to spot potholes and help improve roads.? ? The Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Secretary of State Peter Kyle visited UCL – a world leader in AI research and innovation, to launch the government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan. ? In this plan, we are committing to:?? ? ? New AI Growth Zones – that will house new data centres to power AI sustainably and create jobs?? ? A twenty-fold increase in public?compute power by 2030 – providing the processing power needed to support scientific and medical research? ? Hiring more UK-based AI companies in government work to drive adoption and scale businesses? ? Upskilling the UK workforce in AI – with more training for staff and university places for AI graduates? ? Piloting new ways to improve public services with AI - from quicker access to healthcare, to cutting teacher admin?? Working across government to implement this plan, Matt Clifford has been appointed as the Prime Minister's AI Opportunities Advisor, bringing together a team across 10 Downing Street and DSIT to build the UK's AI capabilities. The UK is starting from a position of strength. Britain is the third largest AI market in the world and numerous technology companies, operating at the AI frontier, are proud to call Britain their home. AI is already being used in hospitals to provide better healthcare. As Feryal Clark, Minister for AI, saw first-hand in Cambridge – the DAWN supercomputer at the University of Cambridge is powering two live projects at Addensbrooke’s Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to drive earlier diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease and automated detection of renal cancer. With AI we can grow our economy, improve lives, and make the UK a global hub for AI investment and innovation. From building skills and talent to revolutionising our infrastructure and compute power – the AI Opportunities Action Plan ensures AI delivers in all corners of the UK.? ? Imagine an AI trained on every NHS interaction—transcribed, anonymised, and publicly owned. This sovereign AI could revolutionise healthcare: faster diagnoses, personalised treatments, and reduced admin burdens. It could predict health crises, empower doctors with insights, and even generate revenue by licensing the model internationally. However, such power demands accountability. If developed ethically and transparently, it becomes a national asset. If left to private hands, it risks misuse and inequity. A publicly owned AI could make the UK a leader in ethical innovation

I hope the government and media are finally recognizing that the UK is a service-based economy rather than a manufacturing one. It’s crucial they start investing not only in AI but in the broader services sector, rather than focusing solely on tangible projects that make for good photo opportunities during ministerial visits. The dominance of the services sector highlights the UK’s shift from manufacturing to an economy driven by knowledge and expertise. AI has the potential to revolutionize services in the same way mechanization transformed industries during the Industrial Revolution.

As it stands, this UK Government’s AI plan is following the Big Tech agenda. The plan does not provide details on how AI’s impact on current UK jobs (how many UK jobs will be lost in different sectors), environmental impacts, what steps are being taken to protect UK citizens data. UK has long history of IT scandals, including recent Post Office Scandal What steps is the UK Government taking to prevent IT and AI Scandals from happening? These articles might be of interest https://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/geoforall/2025-January/006569.html

The AI Opportunities Action Plan is a landmark moment for the UK’s AI ecosystem. At AI Venture X, we’ve been pioneering AI solutions for over two years, building advanced AI agents that are already helping businesses streamline processes, scale efficiently, and create real-world impact. The government’s commitment to initiatives like AI Growth Zones, public compute expansion, and workforce upskilling is exactly what’s needed to position the UK as a global AI leader. These steps will not only drive innovation but also create opportunities for companies like ours to continue delivering transformative solutions. AI is already changing lives—whether it’s improving healthcare, enabling smarter infrastructure, or boosting productivity—and the future looks even brighter. We’re excited to collaborate and contribute to this journey of making the UK a true global hub for AI. #AI #Innovation #AILeadership #UKAI #AIVentureX

In the rapidly advancing age of artificial intelligence (AI), the protection of children from potential risks has become a paramount concern on a global scale. On the 1st of October, 2024, the Association of African Universities, the University of Nottingham, and the Ethical Data Initiative held a panel discussion on Child Protection in the Age of AI as part of their Ethical Data Discussion Series. The event brought together education professionals, child protection experts, and legal experts, to discuss the pressing need to influence and shape national and international policies governing children’s safety online. It highlighted the importance of international and interdisciplinary collaboration, and evidence-based recommendations in this complex domain. The recording of the webinar is available at https://ethicaldatainitiative.org/2024/11/06/child-protection-in-the-age-of-ai-2/

Great to see robots in these pictures and mentioned several times in the action plan. AI can enable robots to work for us autonomously, maintaining infrastructure like road/rail and buried pipework, picking fruit and vegetables, or delivering medicine and cleaning in hospitals.

Feels like now’s a good time to mention that Duality Technologies has a Secure AI Solution. This can enable researchers to train a cancer diagnosis model on NHS data without risking patient privacy. More details here… https://lnkd.in/ew2y72TW.
