Soooo this happened again: I’ve made it to the list of the top #EUinfluencers on TikTok for the second year in a row compiled by ZN, a digital agency specialised in European Union issues. I’m so happy to be part of this small but really cool group of creators who are daring to actually break down what the EU means for people outside the Brussels bubble in short-form video format. This year we’ve seen the European Parliament, Olaf Scholz, Joe Biden and many other politicians and institutions join TikTok after years of disregarding the platform’s audiences – yet everyone keeps talking about social media misinformation and the far right’s success among those same users. I keep asking myself whether it’s actually their success, or the failure of others to engage in conversations with young people instead of talking down to them. As someone who invested a lot of time in raising awareness around the need for journalists and media outlets to be on TikTok back when it wasn’t mainstream yet, I can say it’s not very different to what happened in the journalism industry. Yet these EU-focused influencers or creators focused on video platforms, from TikTok to Instagram to YouTube, get very little recognition despite all the hurdles they face: from lack of time and resources to anti-EU disinformation and the fact that the EU is actually hard to explain when you’re not preaching to the converted. In short: follow these very cool people, take vertical video audiences seriously and help us create a more informed conversation on EU politics outside X and LinkedIn. I’m thrilled to share that I’ve officially completed my degree in Marketing! On November 19th, I successfully presented my final thesis titled: "How TikTok Has Affected Spanish Young Population Through Marketing Campaigns of the Most Voted Political Parties on the Last Elections. 23J 2023. PSOE, PP, Sumar and Vox." In this research, I explored how TikTok, as one of the fastest-growing social media platforms, has reshaped political communication and influenced the younger demographic in Spain. I analyzed how the most voted parties—PSOE, PP, Sumar, and Vox—leveraged TikTok during the 2023 general elections to engage with young voters through innovative (and sometimes polarizing) marketing campaigns. The study provided fascinating insights into the intersection of politics, marketing, and generational change, and how digital platforms are redefining traditional strategies. I’d like to express my deepest gratitude to my tutor, María Coro Jiménez Arellano Juanena, for her guidance and support throughout this process. This project has been a reminder of how fast the world of marketing evolves and how crucial it is to understand the tools shaping our society.
