“I’m a Military or Police Veteran—Could Cybersecurity Be Right for Me?” Are you a military or police service member or veteran thinking about what’s next in your career? Cybersecurity might just be your perfect fit. It’s a field that needs disciplined, resilient problem-solvers—sound familiar? If I were exploring a transition to cybersecurity, here are the TOP 3 things I’d do to get started: 1. Identify Your Transferable Skills You already have a toolkit built for success in cybersecurity. Skills like risk assessment, leadership, and critical thinking are in high demand. For example, a military background in logistics or operations planning aligns well with governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) roles. ?? Pro Tip: Make a list of your top 5 strengths and research roles that leverage them. 2. Start with Industry Certifications You don’t need a degree to get started—many cybersecurity roles value certifications over formal education. Start with entry-level credentials like: ? ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity "CC" ? Fortinet Certified Fundamentals FCF and Fortinet Certified Associate FCA? ? Mosse Cyber Security Institute Fundamentals These will give you a solid foundation and help you decide which area of cybersecurity suits you best. ?? Pro Tip: Take advantage of free or discounted veteran programs to earn certifications. 3. Build a Strong Network The cybersecurity community thrives on collaboration, and building connections is key. Start by creating a professional LinkedIn profile and joining veteran-specific cybersecurity groups. Attend meetups or webinars to connect with leaders who can mentor you. ?? Pro Tip: Reach out to veteran-friendly programs like Solve Transition to guide your journey. Why It Matters Cybersecurity isn’t just a job—it’s a mission. Your ability to adapt, problem-solve under pressure, and lead makes you invaluable in this field. If you’re ready to explore this exciting career path, let’s connect! Always learning and always growing. I've received several inquiries about how to break into cybersecurity and GRC. Many are eager to understand the best approach to kickstart their journey. Start with this: - Harness the power of your curiosity - Begin from your current position. What in your environment could be linked to cybersecurity practices? Being intensely curious is key.?? In an industry where change occurs in nanoseconds, curiosity stands as your most valuable asset to stay up to speed with crucial developments. Curiosity also aids you in discovering what you already know that you haven’t quite tapped in to. ?? Can this field be intimidating? Absolutely ?? Will you have imposter syndrome? Yup ???? Do you need a tech background? Nope ???? You just need to be willing to learn and speak to your experiences in an aligned way. As an avid learner I really enjoy taking complex ideas and making them simple to grasp. If you’re looking to know more about how your skills align with this industry or you need help optimizing your resume to match your skills to the work that you’ve already done, shoot me a DM with a “curious about cyber” tag line and lets see how I can help. I offer career coaching, resume review, and mentorship. (I have a few spots open for 1:1s) If you know anyone that’s curious about Cybersecurity and GRC feel free to connect us here on Linked. ?????? 1??3?? - 31 Days Cybersecurity Challenge ?? How can cybersecurity professionals leverage #networking and #mentorship for career growth? ?? Let's start with ???????????? - there are lots of resources to leverage, a good example is #linkedin. Build a Strong Professional Network. Networking opens doors to a lot of opportunities, collaborations, and projects that might not be accessible publicly. By attending and participating in webinars, conferences, and industry events, cybersecurity professionals can stay updated on new trends, job openings and connect with potential employers or clients. A robust professional network provides insights into the latest trends and best practices. By engaging with others in the field, you can share knowledge on recent incidents, regulatory changes, or innovative technologies. For a cybersecurity professional, this is invaluable as it promotes a broader understanding of how cybersecurity fits into the larger context. This is where, for example, business analysis and cybersecurity can intersect, offering a unique perspective on risk management and strategic planning. Finding and leveraging ???????????? - senior professionals with experience in cybersecurity can provide guidance on technical skills, career strategies, and navigating complex work environments. Mentors often share their own career experiences, which can help you avoid common pitfalls and make more informed decisions. More like standing on the shoulders of a giant. For instance, your mentor can recommend courses or certifications that align with your career goals, such as #CISSP, #CISM, or more niche certifications like the #CEH or #OSCP, depending on your focus area. Mentorship is not just about technical knowledge; it’s also about understanding the broader picture. A good mentor can help you see how cybersecurity fits into business objectives, regulatory compliance, and risk management strategies. This perspective is vital for career growth, especially if you’re aiming for leadership roles and help you assess your strengths and interests and guide you towards a path that aligns with both. You can also contribute to your field or community by sharing your knowledge through articles on LinkedIn, or speaking at conferences can significantly boost your professional profile. This not only positions you as a thought leader but also attracts mentors and potential collaborators who are aligned with your interests. Special shoutout to Dr Iretioluwa Akerele, Cybarik and CyBlack for commissioning this challenge. Happy #CybersecurityAwarenessMonth! #31DaysCybersecurityChallenge #cybersecurity #thoughtleader #leadership #growth #careergrowth

90% of the problems we have in cyber security can be solved by focusing on people rather than technology. We have a people shortage. And no, not the number of people. (I’ll save the talent shortage debate for another time.) But, how people develop. Our industry is obsessed with certifications and working with specific technologies. Another cert doesn't suddenly make someone more capable. It doesn’t teach you how to influence a room, build trust, or drive real change. I am building a business to challenge the traditional "upskilling route." ISACA, I am coming for you ?? If people understood more about: → Communication → Collaboration → People’s feelings → Value creation These are the real answers to our issues. Your tech stack is only as strong as the people behind it. If you’re ready to focus on developing real leadership skills and move beyond just tech, DM me with “people first” and let’s talk.

We talk about the cybersecurity skills gap like it’s some impossible challenge. But here’s the reality: It’s not about lack of talent—it’s about lack of opportunity and support. Most companies: ? Blame the shortage on candidates ? Assume hiring will solve the problem ? Forget the need for continuous learning But the truth is: ? Your team already has untapped potential ? Upskilling is the real game changer ? Building a culture of growth is essential The skills gap isn’t going anywhere unless we rethink how we approach it. The companies winning in cybersecurity? They invest in their people, nurture growth, and embrace the future of learning. Want to learn the key takeaways from the Fortinet Skills Gap Report? Starting A Cybersecurity Career in 2025 ?? Avoid these mistakes to stay on the right track: 1 - Chasing Irrelevant Certifications: ? Certifications are valuable, but only if they align with your career goals. Don’t waste time on certs that look good on paper but don’t add value to your desired role. Example: If cloud security excites you, prioritize certs like CCSK or AWS certifications instead of a generalist cert. 2 - Neglecting Hands-On Experience: ? Certifications prove knowledge, but employers want practical skills. Relying solely on theory won’t cut it. Build hands-on experience with labs, open-source projects, or real-world simulations to bridge the gap between learning and doing. 3 - Ignoring Soft Skills: ? Communication, teamwork, and leadership are just as important as technical know-how. Many cybersecurity roles require you to explain complex ideas to non-technical stakeholders. Sharpen your ability to simplify, influence, and collaborate 4 - Focusing Solely on Tools, Not Concepts: ? Tools change, but core concepts remain. Learn the principles of risk management, threat modeling, and security architecture. These skills are evergreen and will allow you to adapt as the industry evolves. Simple fact is... your career is a marathon, not a sprint. Good luck on your cybersecurity journey in 2025!

Joe Head dropping some serious knowledge today. I agree whole-heartedly. Tech-first approaches to cyber security and identity security usually fail. People & Process-first thinking is what drives real change, engages end users, and ensures real value to the business by identifying true points of risk and addressing them. Thanks for this, Joe! #cybersecurity #identitysecurity #peopleandprocessfirst #techforgood Strategic Security Solutions (S3) Jordan Gersten Johanna Baum

?? Have you ever wondered what sets successful people apart in tech? It’s not just talent—it’s consistency. According to a study by Harvard Business Review, people who set clear, small, achievable goals are 10x more likely to succeed than those who focus on big-picture goals alone. Here’s how I stay consistent in my cybersecurity journey: 1. ?? Schedule daily learning time—30 minutes a day can lead to big improvements. 2. ??? Practice hands-on skills regularly in a lab environment. 3. ? Break larger goals into manageable weekly tasks. 4. ?? Network consistently—building relationships opens doors. 5. ?? Celebrate every win, no matter how small. Success isn’t about massive leaps—it’s about showing up every day. What’s one consistent habit that has helped you grow in your career? #TechSuccess #Consistency #CyberSecurityCareers #GrowthMindset #Motivation
