Frontline treatment for HER2+ metastatic breast cancer has remained mostly unchanged for over a decade. Just to be revolutionized over one single year - First, the EMERALD trial at ASCO24, showing non-inferiority of an eribulin (vs taxane) backbone for HP. - Then, PATINA, stunning the SABCS24 auditorium with the longest PFS ever seen for this disease, through the addition of palbociclib. - And soon, DESTINY-Breast-09, with the highly anticipated substitution of first-line chemo with an ADC (T-DXd). This all means huge opportunities for patients, but also relevant challenges to make the most adequate therapeutic choice in a rapidly evolving landscape. In our latest JCO editorial, accompanying the brilliant EMERALD trial publication, Tess O'Meara, MD, MHS and I review these evolutions in the treatment of HER2+ breast cancer, suggesting a framework to select the most appropriate first-line treatment. Recognizing the Importance of Early Detection: With one in eight women expected to develop breast cancer during their lifetime, per the CDC, early detection is the key to saving lives. When discovered early, and in the localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate for breast cancer is 99%, per the American Cancer Society. The most important screening test for breast cancer is a mammogram, an X-ray of the breast that can detect breast cancer up to two years before the tumor can be felt by you or your doctor. “Patients should start anywhere between the ages of 40 and 50 and then get mammograms on an annual basis,” advises Dr. Audrey Gonzalez, MD, a family medicine physician with STHS Clinics. To schedule a mammogram, call #STHS Pre-Registration at (956) 388-2190. For more information on mammograms, check out our latest South Texas Health Minute on ValleyCentral.com. bit.ly/3VwvKzH
