Anthony Ku, Chris Greig, and Eric Larson at Princeton University's Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment highlight why "creating new markets is not easy". If we are to avoid the possibility that clean hydrogen doesn't just end up as a substitute for current higher carbon intensive H2, rather than becoming a critical pillar in a transformed global clean energy economy, we would be well served to act on the practical, actionable guidance they offer. They argue three systemic issues must be addressed for clean hydrogen to have "commercial liftoff" and grow 10x over the next 20 years: 1) Clarify how hydrogen fits in the future clean energy system; 2) Crack "chicken and egg" sequencing barriers"; and, 3) Harness incumbency without being captured by it. The specific ideas and actions they propose to resolve each of these issues illuminate a path forward to bring the promise of forming a major global clean H2 economy to fruition. Governments need to focus on investing in technology, innovation and research before setting policies. The color nomenclature for hydrogen doesn't make sense. LCOH and Carbon Intensity are more reasonable metrics to induce decarbonization. With an LCOH at around $1/kg and a CI less than 1.5 kg CO2/kg H2, Natural Hydrogen will be a disruptive source in the energy mix. #decarbozation #naturalhydrogen #energy #carbonintensity #lowcarbonhydrogen
