The Maryland Department of the Environment held a public hearing about proposed amendments to its plans for the reconstruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The Key Bridge collapsed in March after it was struck by a cargo ship. Eight construction workers fell into the Patapsco River below the bridge in the incident. Six of them died. The proposed amendments include the construction of additional temporary piles and a temporary trestle extending from the northeast and southwest shorelines along the proposed bridge alignment, terminating approximately 200 feet from the federal navigation channel. The GSA picked HENSEL PHELPS for a $274.7 million design-build contract to expand a border station in Douglas, Arizona. The New Douglas Commercial Land Port of Entry project is funded under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act, according to the agency. In all, the GSA plans to upgrade 38 federal land ports of entry along the United States’ northern and southern borders using $1 billion in IRA and IIJA funds, with the goal of modernizing the facilities while boosting domestic clean manufacturing and sustainable technologies. The agency aims to use low embodied carbon asphalt, concrete, glass and steel materials for the Douglas project, which will be designed to achieve LEED-Gold standards. Had a fantastic turnout for our Lunch & Learn, where Ash Gardner and I presented on civil design of traffic barriers for structures, based on DTP’s Bridge Technical Note BTN-001. Key topics covered included: ? Structural Barrier Performance Level Assessment ? Determining Extents of Off-Structure Barriers ? Design Considerations for Road Safety Barriers ? Application of Traffic Barriers for Retaining Walls We also discussed lessons learned from past projects and clarified some uncertainties in the barrier design process.
