As 2024 winds down, I’ve been reflecting on some truly unique experiences this year (some from last week)—beyond awards, certificates, or promotions and other assorted "achievements". Here are two that left a lasting impression: one planned, one serendipitous. The first: a visit to the Tu Hieu Temple & Monastery in Hue (Hoo-ey), the former royal capital of Vietnam. Founded in 1848, this historic monastery holds personal significance for me—it’s where Buddhist Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh (lovingly called Thay) was ordained and spent his early years. Thay’s teachings on mindfulness, presence, and the idea of “home” have been a profound inspiration, especially during the pandemic. It’s poignant that he returned to Vietnam after 39 years in exile and spent his final years in Tu Hieu, passing away at 'home' in 2022, at the age of 95. Walking those grounds felt like reconnecting with his legacy in a deeply personal way. The second was entirely unplanned (but we suspect it was planted by our tour advisor) in H?i An, an old town three hours north of Hue. After a long morning stroll, Arjyo and I stumbled upon the Reaching Out Tea House, housed in a tranquil old mansion. The space is serene, the service exceptional—and the servers? Speech and hearing impaired. Instead of spoken words, communication happens through written notes or wooden blocks with pre-written messages. It’s an experience that gently encourages mindfulness, silence, and connection. The walls were adorned with Thich Nhat Hanh’s calligraphy and books, including one I wrote about earlier > https://lnkd.in/g_YwaeYt If you ever find yourself in Central Vietnam, I wholeheartedly recommend both. Even if Zen Buddhism or mindfulness isn’t your cup-of-tea, a quiet cup at Reaching Out might be just the pause you need. PS: For a beautiful reflection on Tu Hieu and the idea of “home,” I recommend this piece > https://lnkd.in/gxGgtXwa Wish you were here Esha, Rasagy, Dhruv, Mohana, Soo and my other DesignUp Conference team mates ++
