Those of us who migrate to new places are eager to connect and work with others. But migrants also are at risk of being de-skilled and exploited, just because they need the work and are often starting over. Employers and people can and should do better to have inclusive policies and practices, leveraging talent and ensuring dignified access to jobs and opportunities. In our consulting work, we partner with organizations to develop learning strategies and enhance leadership skills that serve everyone, newcomers included. Employing foreign workers is essential, yet maintaining a delicate equilibrium is paramount. We're not just integrating foreign expertise across various job spectrums, including both manual and professional roles. Particularly concerning are the professional positions, which sometimes deprive Singaporeans of opportunities. While we recruit necessary skills, it's imperative to establish robust systems for nurturing local talent to eventually assume these roles. Singapore notably lacks such mechanisms, exacerbated by the granting of citizenship to foreign hires. When I first came to Australia, I was asked: “Do you have Australian experience?” As someone who has led global teams, worked across multiple industries, and delivered projects across geographies, I found this question puzzling—and a little deflating. Wasn’t my decades of international experience enough? The reality was, it wasn’t. To establish myself in the Australian job market, I had to take a significant step down into a short term Business Analyst role just to prove my capability. It was humbling, but more importantly, it was eye-opening. This isn’t just my story. It’s the story of countless skilled migrants who arrive in Australia, ready to contribute but find themselves sidelined because they don’t have “local experience”. Research shows that many migrants face years of underemployment despite bringing expertise, fresh perspectives, and a global outlook. Here’s the question I’ve wrestled with ever since: why is “Australian experience” so often prioritised over global expertise? To me, it highlights an opportunity for Australian organisations to rethink their approach. What if we valued diversity of experience as much as “local experience”? What if we celebrated fresh perspectives instead of requiring conformity? What if we recognised that skills don’t lose their relevance simply because they were honed in another country? For anyone else who has faced this challenge: I see you. The step down isn’t easy, but it can be a step forward. Australia’s changing faces Australia like so many other countries is becoming a more multicultural community. Today when I had the opportunity to meet with the staff at the #treasurycasino and discuss #gamblingharmawarenessweek What became more evident was the number of staff and the number of customers from multicultural backgrounds. It really makes me wonder how we are going to achieve positive outcomes dealing with our staff and customers when we have such little #culturalawareness. How do we propose to get the best outcomes from our staff and our customers when we have very little understanding of #multiculturalism and what it really means. Companies often spend so much money hiring the correct talent, but not knowing how to appropriately work with those staff. Or Government departments wondering why they are not achieving the desired outcomes with multicultural communities. I have seen this lack of understanding across #government #notforprofit and the #private sector. Hopefully we are heading towards a more inclusive Australia. Not just because of people with many different colours living here, but a more in depth understanding of each other as people. As we've observed, 2024 started slower in the recruitment space, but Bernard Hickey's newsletter on Tuesday got me thinking about the robust migration statistics released by Stats NZ, and I’m optimistic about the dynamic changes the latter half of the year will bring. Notably, a record-high 226,000 non-New Zealand citizens migrated here last year, bringing diverse skills and fresh perspectives that can invigorate our industries. What businesses can do: ?? Implement cross-cultural training: Invest in cross-cultural competence training for your teams. Enhancing communication within diverse teams prepares your workforce to integrate new talents smoothly and effectively. ?? Tailor recruitment messaging: Adjust your recruitment messaging to resonate with a global audience. Highlight your commitment to diversity and inclusion, which can attract top talent looking for supportive and progressive workplaces. ??
