Today’s agricultural system is facing a critical moment. Low genetic gains in our major crops and environmental degradation are impacting global food security, compounded by an unpredictably changing climate. Representing 450 Gt of global carbon, plants are a critical lever for addressing these interconnected challenges, but the pace of agricultural innovation has been slow. Synthetic biology is revolutionising the world of healthcare with novel approaches to drug production, CRISPR therapeutic treatments and the advent of personalised genomics. Could we leverage advances in synthetic biology to unlock the power of plants and safeguard our agricultural industry? Our programme thesis Synthetic Plants for a Sustainable Future is led by ARIA Programme Director Angie Burnett, and sets out a vision for unlocking new plant capabilities to meet the future needs of humankind. By uniting expertise in plant and synthetic biology, we’ll aim to design, build, and deliver synthetic chromosomes and synthetic chloroplasts that are viable in a living plant, and imbue plants with new suites of functionality – from reducing agricultural water use to protecting crop yields in uncertain conditions. We’re now seeking the expertise of cell biologists, biochemists, molecular biologists, geneticists, plant biologists, plant synthetic biologists, non-plant synthetic biologists, systems biologists, social scientists, and ethicists. The past few years have been a career rollercoaster for me. After the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 shut the door on my career in agriculture, I faced a long and difficult struggle trying to find my way back into the industry, especially my choice of role. But; "Every storm runs out of rain" and, my breakthrough came with Talents in Agriculture. After that call with Oyin Asaaju, the Talent-in-Chief of TAG, the end of a difficult chapter came and the beginning of a new journey unfolded. The joy of returning to the industry I love overshadowed every hardship I’d faced. Looking back at the few months I have spent with this team, I can say that my work is filled with purpose, impact, and excitement. While my days no longer involve planting seeds and harvesting crops in the fields, I now work with a passionate team who are dedicated to planting talents and helping agribusinesses harvest growth, efficiency, and profitability. On September 03, 2024, Vaikunth Mehta National Institute of Cooperative Management (VAMNICOM)-Pune, hosted a Career Forum Session (CFS) featuring an insightful presentation by Mr.Amol Gawande from IDH(Initiatief Duurzame Handel). The session focused on the Multi Actor Platform (MAP) for sustainable business development, an initiative designed to revolutionize markets and empower businesses to generate value for both people and the planet. Mr. Gawande shared IDH’s mission to enhance the livelihoods of farmers, rural communities, and the environment through sustainable agricultural practices and responsible land use. Key IDH programs discussed included the Sustainable Coffee Program, Cocoa Program, Tea Program, Palm Oil Program, Soy Program, and the IDH Farm Fit initiative, all aimed at boosting productivity and sustainability for smallholder farmers. Mr. Gawande emphasized the importance of engaging diverse stakeholders in the MAP process, including the public sector, government agencies, civil society organizations, and research institutions. He highlighted the collaborative decision-making process that involves analysis, dialogue, and consensus-building, ensuring that all voices are heard. The session also covered the critical elements of MAP, such as knowledge sharing, capacity building, platform design, and context-specific adaptation. Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning (MEL) was another key focus, with Mr. Gawande outlining the importance of defining Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), regular monitoring, impact evaluation, and incorporating lessons learned to continuously improve the platform's effectiveness. Despite the many benefits of MAP in promoting sustainable agriculture, combating deforestation, and encouraging inclusive trade, Mr. Gawande also addressed the challenges in implementing such a platform. These include conflicts of interest, power dynamics, resource constraints, and difficulties in impact measurement. His insights provided a comprehensive understanding of how sustainable business development can be achieved through collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to long-term goals.
