?? AI and the Dangers of Misinformation ?? Recent investigations reveal alarming trends where AI-powered search engines from Google, Microsoft, and Perplexity have inadvertently surfaced deeply racist research promoting the idea of racial superiority based on flawed IQ data. Patrik Hermansson, a researcher with Hope Not Hate, discovered that these search engines presented exact IQ scores from discredited studies by Richard Lynn, a prominent figure in the race science movement. This work has long been used by extremist groups to support racist ideologies. Despite the AI systems attempting to provide quick answers, the underlying data is of poor quality and often misleading. Experts warn that promoting such information can contribute to radicalization and perpetuate harmful racial stereotypes. As AI continues to reshape our online landscape, it’s crucial for us to question the sources of information and advocate for responsible AI practices. Earlier this month, the AI/Data COP heard a great presentation by Taka Ariga, Chief Data Scientist for the GAO. Mr. Arriga described the many ways that GAO is evaluating and beginning to use AI in its work. One of the best pieces of advice he gave is to look at AI as one type of tool to solve problems. We followed five AI generated voters throughout the election campaign, introducing them to a wide spectrum of national and local election materials, to understand how the speeches and pledges made by Parties impact their voting intention. This webinar will discuss the process, what we learnt about the election, and what this taught us about the benefits and limitations of using AI personas in research. The process: We will discuss how we built our AI personas, including what data was used and how we built and refined our prompts. What we learnt about the election: We will discuss how Marginal Moments complemented other methods of research Ipsos used to understand the electorate and where it was most useful to understand public perceptions The benefits and limitations of using AI in research: We will touch on the challenges we faced throughout this process and any limitations of using AI personas as part of the research process.
