In India, 80% of rural women are engaged in agriculture, yet they're rarely recognized as 'farmers.' According to the #UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (#FAO), 'if women had the same access to productive resources as men, they could increase yields on their farms by 20-30% - the total agricultural output in developing countries by up to 4%, and reducing the number of hungry people in the world by 12–17% - that's 100-150 million people.' A grassroots movement is underway to change all that - empowering women farmers by ensuring they have access to technical training, government schemes, market linkages, land titles??and leadership roles in agriculture. Majority of the women in rural India are associated with #Agriculture and are small and marginal farmers. Increasingly frequent #climateshocks have a significant impact in lowering their agricultural productivity while driving up input costs. Demonstrative pilots through #SEWA's #Agriculturecampaign has shown that access to technology can be a game-changer for the smallholder women farmers in reversing these challenges. However, some of the most common barriers they face in accessing these technology are: high costs, lack of awareness, and low risk-taking capacity due to subsistent farming. SEWA is addressing these myriad of challenges through its #integratedapproach combining the power of: #Organizing to build collective bargaining power; #CapacityBuilding to increase awareness and education about new technologies and its adoption; Access to innovative Agro-tech and inputs; Access to innovative financing solutions to make these inputs and technology affordable and Backward - Forward Market Linkages. The video here shows the story of?Niruben, a smallholder farmer member of SEWA, who has turned around her subsistent agriculture to sustainable, profitable and viable by adopting cutting edge technology her own fields for a whole year. SEWA's agricultural campaign not only provided her awareness and education to adopt the technology but also facilitated access to the same through innovative financing solutions. SEWA strongly believes that when it comes to building climate resilience of the poor, It’s about building trust, reducing risks, and ensuring that technical, technological and financial inclusion for women. Uttar Pradesh to Launch Women Farmer Producer Organizations for Empowerment and Self-Reliance Under State Rural Livelihood Mission.: The Uttar Pradesh government plans to establish women Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) in rural areas to empower women and enhance their self-reliance through the State Rural Livelihood Mission. Ten Mahila Kisan Producer Organizations will serve as model FPOs, enabling women farmers to organize, process, and sell their produce at better prices. This initiative aims to improve financial well-being by forming Self-Help Groups, providing training, financial assistance, and technical support for diverse economic activities. Empowering rural women of Sirmaur and Solan, Himachal Pradesh! The Unnati Project, supported by SBI Foundation, was featured on Drishti Samachar, showcasing bakery training for aspiring women entrepreneurs. As part of #AgriTrailblazers and #AgriTalkwithLaxmi, here is an interview with?Arun Kumar Panda, Head of Division for Gender Family and Community Studies at Odisha-based #ICAR-Central Institute for Women in Agriculture. ?"Compared to men, women are lagging in agriculture — a reality often referred to as a gender issue," Panda stated. The key highlights of the interview are: Asked about the absence of women in high-level agricultural roles, such as the ICAR chief, Agriculture Secretary or Minister at the Centre, Panda noted a shift in narrative from women's development to women-led development. "The time will come, and definitely this problem will also be addressed," he asserted. Future policies to bring women farmers into the mainstream should focus on: Gender-disaggregated data: Collect and analyze data to inform policy decisions. Financial inclusion: Improve women's access to finance, cooperatives, and microcredits to enhance economic empowerment. Monitoring mechanisms: Establish robust systems to evaluate gender policies effectively. Capacity building: Invest in training and skill development tailored for women in agriculture.
