This month, IESC’s U.S. Department of Agriculture Food for Progress Agricultural and Climate Smart Innovations (Proyecto ATraCSI) Project supported the Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration (SIECA) to host a tri-national roundtable. As part of our efforts to increase trade facilitation in northern Central America, we brought together 35 representatives from the ministries of economy in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. A key topic of discussion was creating a unified Central American market. USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS)

Southern Chile is home to one of the world's largest salmon industries, supplying nearly 1/3 of all farmed salmon globally. While the industry has been subject to stringent policies in the region, Ricardo Garcia, President of the Chilean Salmon Council and CEO of GSI Member Camanchaca SA, recently wrote about the industry’s contributions to the local economy, and the technological innovations and significant improvements made to the standard of operations in the region. As we look to the 2030 SDGs, and carry out work to meet the global demand for high-quality protein, it’s important to base policy decisions on facts and scientific data. The recent conference hosted by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), in partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), underscored the critical role of community engagement and inter-sectoral collaboration in achieving food security and sustainable agricultural development. Held under the theme, "Agricultural Development for Food Security: Addressing Challenges to Technological Transformation, Sustainability, and Good Governance", the conference gathered experts to explore strategies that can address pressing challenges in agriculture. The event featured two parallel afternoon sessions, each focusing on financial access for farmers and agricultural development practices. The first CIBUS Interregional Meeting in Sofia, June 2024 ??The first interregional meeting of the project ”CIBUS - Cutting food loss and waste in Europe” brings together 9 partners from 8 EU regions and will include exchange session on the first day and study visits on the second day. In the exchange session a seminar will be organized, looking at the EU policy context, ongoing initiatives and research. The aim is to dive into an initial, 360° exchange on key topics such as: ??Factors contributing to food loss/waste across production/supply chain; ??Levels of innovation related to measures for food loss/waste prevention; ??Policy, practical, financial and capacity/skill needs. The agri-food sector stands out as a major driver of Canada’s economic future. As we face global challenges—food insecurity, climate change, and the push for greater productivity with lower environmental impact—innovation in this sector is more important than ever. While Canada excels in research and innovation, we often fall short in translating these efforts into outputs like patents and intellectual property. To fully harness our innovations, we must focus on transforming them into tangible economic productivity. Realizing this potential will require a collaborative approach, drawing on the strengths of government, industry, and academia.
