Gender-based violence (#GBV) and HIV/AIDS are interconnected crises in the U.S. Survivors of GBV face increased risks of HIV due to many factors including lack of consent. Forced or coerced acts often leave survivors unable to protect themselves, increasing their risk of HIV. Lack of consent often leaves survivors without the chance to make choices to protect their health, such as condom health or PrEP. Empowering survivors starts with promoting education, awareness, and access to survivor-centered care. Violence against women and marginalized communities creates conditions where access to health, including HIV/AIDS prevention, becomes a challenge. Survivors of violence often face barriers like stigma, discrimination, and coercion, making it harder to seek healthcare, access treatment, or demand their rights. Gender-based violence is not just a personal issue; it is a systemic one. It fuels the spread of HIV by disempowering those most at risk and preventing them from accessing life-saving information and services. How can we talk about prevention and treatment when survivors live in environments that suppress their agency and deny them justice? At Sakshi, we approach these interconnected issues through a survivor-centric lens, recognising that the pathways to justice, health, and equity must centre the needs and voices of those most affected. We pair this with community accountability, challenging the norms and power structures that perpetuate both violence and health inequities. Are we, as a society, holding systems accountable for creating conditions that enable survivors to access health and justice?
