?? The Reality of Job Market Dynamics: A Personal Experience ??
Recently, I had an eye-opening experience #Joboffer that highlights the challenges and, at times, the absurdity of how some companies approach hiring. I applied for a 3-month contract role as a Sales Trainer for Upselling (Chat) with a reputed MNC in Chandigarh. What unfolded was nothing short of baffling.
Here’s what happened:
? Cleared multiple rounds with HR, the Senior Manager, and the Process Head—one of which I attended sitting in my car, outside a hospital.
? Received confirmation to relocate via the consultant.
Then came the unexpected:
?? Out of the blue, the Site Head, Co-Founder, Director, Process Director, and others wanted “more discussions.”
?? What was supposed to be a mid-level management position suddenly became a panel of top executives interviewing me.
After 5 rounds and another confirmation, the job requirement changed—from upselling to cross-selling. This shift left me puzzled, especially since these senior leaders couldn’t align on the fundamental difference between the two concepts.
?? It became clear during these interactions that the company had been struggling to meet their metrics for a while, which is why they were outsourcing this role. However, their lack of clarity and cohesion on goals and strategies made it evident they weren’t ready to tackle this challenge effectively.
?? Unsurprisingly, the job was eventually put on hold.
Moral of the Story?
1?? Clarity is key. If leadership isn’t aligned on the basics, how can the team execute effectively?
2?? Candidate time and effort deserve respect. Multiple rounds and shifting goalposts waste everyone’s energy.
3?? Companies must focus on solutions, not just high-level rhetoric. It’s one thing to aim high, but missing the mark repeatedly calls for a grounded approach.
No disrespect intended, but this experience reflects why it’s critical to evaluate opportunities as much as they evaluate you.
?? To fellow professionals: Have you encountered situations where a role morphed into something unrecognizable during the hiring process? Let’s share our stories and lessons learned.
