????? Why are companies dropping their support and sponsorship for Copenhagen Pride? ????? Today is the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT)… which got me into reflecting mode! As a Maersk employee and a volunteer within the Human Rights team at Copenhagen Pride, I’ve closely witnessed the recent events concerning sponsorship and support. While I have reservations about the communication approach and some decisions taken by Copenhagen Pride — certainly, there’s room for a firmer stance — the reasoning some companies have cited for withdrawing their funding strikes a dissonant chord with me. It’s crucial to understand that calling Copenhagen Pride "too political" is a fundamental misinterpretation of its core mission. Pride, inherently, is political and about advocating for equality and human rights. It's a stance that should be championed, not shunned as overly political. The notion that an organization devoted to human rights should downplay its advocacy to appease corporate comfort is not only disappointing but also contradictory to the values of inclusion and respect. To the companies rethinking their support: disengaging may be your choice, but criticizing the moral compass of a human rights advocate as justification reveals a deeper disconnect. You don't ask other societal champions to mute their missions, so why should Copenhagen Pride? To Copenhagen Pride: Now more than ever, it's essential to focus on the core values of your organization. The work you do is crucial, continue to fight for human rights for EVERYONE, stand firm in your beliefs, and lead with courage. The path of advocacy is never easy, but it is always necessary. Let’s not dilute the messages that need to be heard. Instead, let’s stand firm, engage in constructive dialogue, and move forward with integrity. The 18th July to 17th August 2024 marks South Asian Heritage Month, 6 years since its founding in 2018. This year’s theme is called “Free to be me”, a very versatile theme asking individuals, communities and organisations to embrace differences in heritage and culture and truly foster inclusivity. In line with the Trust’s values- to “celebrate”, “commemorate”, “educate”– this month is an opportunity for us all to celebrate the significance of South Asian heritage in the workplace and British society. ??
