An Unexpected Networking Opportunity at 30,000 Feet. Today, I had to take a flight from Chennai to Vizag, expecting nothing more than a routine journey. Little did I know that this trip would turn into an incredible networking opportunity. Before takeoff, I was coordinating an appointment with a key client from a private automotive company. Midway through the flight, the gentleman next to me, who had noticed my conversation earlier, introduced himself. He mentioned he had come to Chennai for the automotive exhibition and was now headed to Vizag. He was the BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER at a renowned company. What started as a casual chat quickly turned into an engaging discussion about our shared passion: SALES. We explored the psychology of selling, the thrill of meeting targets, and the dynamic nature of our roles. We both agreed that we thrive on the face-to-face interactions and ever-changing challenges, rather than SITTING IN FRONT OF A COMPUTER ALL DAY. He shared his inspiring journey from sales executive to his current role, emphasizing perseverance and continuous learning. By the end of the flight, we had exchanged contact information, and he kindly offered to assist me with any needs in Vizag. This experience reminded me of the importance of being open to new connections and opportunities, even in the most unexpected places. Networking can happen anywhere, anytime. Its not 2nd, 3rd, or 4th … its year no 13th! #Gratitudepost March 10, 2010, marked the beginning of my professional journey. Fresh out of graduate college, I applied for a walk -in Sales Executive position at Vijay Sales a fast growing electronics retail chain. Little did I know, this was more than just my first job; it was the start of a transformative path both as a professional and on the personal front too During the interview, the then HR head Pinky N.D. Kansara saw a potential in me that I hadn't recognized myself. Instead of Sales/Marketing, she encouraged me to explore a career in HR. That pivotal moment set the course for my future, and I dedicated the next 18 months to growing and learning at Vijay Sales. After leaving to pursue higher education, I was grateful for the solid foundation they provided. But what truly stands out in my memory are the moments that followed. Each Diwali, without fail, I received a knock on my door. It was a box of sweets from Vijay Sales. The joy I felt was indescribable—not just for the treats, but for the thoughtfulness behind them. I thought this would continue may be next year max. This year, its 13 years since i left Vijaysales and guess what, the first set of sweets i received this year again turned out to be from Vijaysales!!. Over the last 13 years, that simple gesture has repeated itself, a beautiful reminder of the connections forged during my time there. Companies do it for one year,max 2 -3 years. But to do this for 13 long years its just incredible! My addresses have changed, but the sweet boxes come searching still. This tradition speaks volumes. It’s rare for companies to maintain such relationships with former employees, yet Vijay Sales has done so consistently—not out of obligation, but from genuine care.Not taking into consideration my tenure, seniority or any such thing. In a world where businesses focus heavily on engagement strategies and processes, it’s easy to overlook what truly matters: the power of genuine human connection. As we embrace AI and stringent protocols, it’s extremely important that we don’t forget that authentic relationships are the heart of a thriving productive workplace culture.
