A huge percentage of our young people don't have meaningful work. They need to eat, they need homes for their families. We know mining can fix this. "People ask about the environment." - We have a BEAUTIFUL country. We have to care for her. We MUST do the right things and sometimes the companies won't be pleased. But what I promise to everyone in this room is this: If it's a yes, you'll get it quickly. If it's a no, you'll get it quickly. He went on to say that he had consolidated all of the necessary permit people and agencies into one building so no one person or group could hamper decisions either way. Like it or not, I can understand why that group, who literally can't lose their jobs, never have to worry about lockdowns, or lay offs, have the luxury to stand up and say, "no fracking, no drilling, no-everything, because, it doesn't affect them." But in the process, NIMBY "not in my backyard" has sadly normalized fracking families apart. Here? Bad. Alberta? OK. Daily non-stop flights full of moms, dads, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, even grandparents! I am a very proud U23 "Triple CCC" Hockey Coach. Many of my players are studying at Nova Scotia Community College - NSCC, taking heavy equipment and other AWESOME courses mining companies could use right here, in regions where young people could EASILY purchase their first home. South African police have been working to end illegal mining at an abandoned gold mine in Stilfontein, where hundreds, and potentially thousands, of miners remain trapped underground. Known locally as “zama-zamas,” these miners are drawn to abandoned sites by the chance to earn a livelihood, though often at great personal risk and under syndicate-led control. Since the start of this operation, named “Close the Hole” (or “Vala Umgodi” in Zulu), more than 1,000 miners have surfaced and faced arrest. The standoff has tragically claimed lives, with one decomposing body found, and added urgency to safely extract those still underground. For those who remain, conditions are deteriorating, and their families and community members have been vocal in calling for help. Led by the Society for the Protection of Our Constitution, community advocates have secured a High Court ruling mandating the resumption of food and water supplies to the miners still below. While authorities have labeled the mine as a “crime scene,” the ruling reflects the community's commitment to humane treatment in this ongoing crisis. This operation has already led to 14,000 arrests and the seizure of over $1 million in uncut diamonds, underscoring the scale of South Africa’s illegal mining issues. These mines are not only fraught with danger for the miners but also pose severe risks for law enforcement due to frequent confrontations with armed factions. President Cyril Ramaphosa has emphasized the need for a balanced approach, urging authorities to prioritize safety in retrieving the miners while upholding the law.
