The rest, who didn’t go to top-tier schools but have incredible skills, are often overlooked. A few decades back, the only career choice that seemed available to most of us was engineering or medicine - that's all there was. Last week, I spoke with several people who shared this sentiment, reflecting on similar experiences. We didn’t have the required exposure or even other choices. And those wanted to deviate into other career trajectories were discouraged in order to create safe and secure lives. I have clients who confessed to becoming engineers by default, not desire. But the landscape today is dramatically different with a multitude of exciting paths available. In fact, the current and upcoming generation of workers are predicted to change their careers 5 to 7 times in their lifetime. In India, in the IT sector, its 2 biggest giants – TCS and Infosys, have made a move to reduce the percentage of campus hirings, which is raising concerns for the industry and graduates. This shift raises some pressing questions: ~ What does it mean for the industry? ~ What does this mean for the thousands of engineers graduating each year? If this trend continues and impacts other organizations in the future, it might mean that it's time to explore unexplored areas and upskill strategically. Having seen how tough the education system in India is, especially the grind to get into IITs (Indian Institute of Technology), I’ve witnessed the hard work and dedication it takes. These students really show grit and ambition! However, in my career as a technologist, I've noticed a prevalent preference (I have been guilty myself) for candidates from top universities or FANG companies (Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, and Google) when we hire/partner. While these are impressive achievements, they don't always paint the full picture. Some people burn out just trying to get there. Others might flaunt their credentials without making a real impact, or get stuck in big companies doing simple jobs, used to working in rigid roles. We should recognize that folks from prestigious backgrounds have done something remarkable. But it’s just as important to see that talent, passion, and drive can come from anywhere. Sometimes, those who haven’t followed the traditional prestigious paths bring fresh perspectives, a hunger for growth, and innovative ideas. In my view, we should value passion, innovation, and the desire to grow more than just prestigious labels. We need to look deeper to find people who are truly driven and can make a difference. What could I have done to save me from feeling worthless and anxious after getting PhD degree in my hand with no job: 1. Started to network atleast in my 3rd year if not from the very beginning with people who were working after getting their PhDs. I knew quite a few, but my fault was I never reached out to them. 2. I could have looked up at the eligibility criteria for jobs while I was doing my PhD and should have gained the required expertise during the course of my PhD. 3. While I was applying for postdoc, I should have continued my search and applied in even better labs in other countries. That is I should have had Plan B and Plan C in place. 4. I should have been active on LinkedIn from the very beginning and built a network of like minded people, connected with the alumni of University of Hyderabad, showcase my skillsets, and curated my profile to increase my visibility among recruiters. 5. Last but not the least, should have made the maximum use of my visits to National and International conferences rather than just considering those as an opportunity to go on a trip to another place and enjoying free food!
