Is technology aiding sustainability in design? This is the question we'll pose to six senior professionals specialising in architecture, design and sustainability at our Manchester Studio's first roundtable of the year on Wednesday. As the industry embraces new technologies, there is a growing need to ensure that these innovations align with sustainable practice. As urban environments continue to evolve, the growing need for architectural repurposing and retrofitting has emerged as essential strategies for creating spaces within our carbon limits. By breathing new life into existing structures, we not only preserve cultural and historical significance but also reduce the carbon footprint associated with new construction. This approach offers a profitable avenue for developers and investors seeking sustainable returns, as it often requires less upfront capital and time compared to building from scratch. Moreover, retrofitting and repurposing can be made accessible through innovative design solutions that cater to diverse communities, ensuring that we create spaces that are not only environmentally responsible but also economically viable and socially inclusive. Embracing these practices can significantly contribute to a more sustainable urban landscape while addressing the pressing challenges of climate change.

These are the slides for a really spectacular talk I did for NAN - Neurodiversity Architecture Network back in October. 3 case studies were presented to demonstrate the spectrum and variety of projects that can exist using Neurodiversity as a foundational concept. As a designer you can operate at different levels between body- environment interactions (and I speculate machine interactions ). So from an autistic perspective designing for those needs involves changing scales to form a healthy balance between all senses and sensory experience coming from fidgeters, furniture and built environment. The senses Hypo and Hyper sensitivities give you an extensive pallet to work with as a designer. These change all the time which is why I am a firm believer that giving people agency and control over their environment is key. You can also spot some pictures from the RNIB Grimaldi Building which is the first project to adopt the PAS 6463: Neurodiversity and the built environment.
