Te Hiringa Mahara's 2024 report on mental health and addiction services in Aotearoa, 'Kua Tīmata Te Haerenga', shows inequities for Māori, in both access and delivery of services.
The report recommends an increase in funding for Kaupapa Māori services, to meet the need for "culturally appropriate and safe support within welcoming spaces, ensuring those seeking the services feel safe, cared for, trusted, and understood."
The report also shows that barriers to access affect Māori disproportionately: cost, time off work, transportation, and childcare. Together with experiences of discrimination, these factors can hold Tāngata Māori back from seeking help when they need it - meaning they present later, needing more acute services.
More funding is needed, and urgently, to provide the culturally safe and appropriate services required for our whānau Māori.
