#ArchitectsofFM A fun journey, from learning to leadership - MUKUND Deshpande For any young engineer in the 90s, it was a struggle to find something meaningful; it was just before the Indian economy opened up. During this time, Forbes Marshall (then J N Marshall) came to Surat scouting for engineers, and I was picked as a graduate trainee for Vadodara (a.k.a Baroda – once my uncle refused to alight, and a railway TT had a difficult time convincing my uncle that there were both the same).? It was love at first sight, and the story continues, with the exception of a two year gap. My first boss had a great influence on me. I emulated him in everything I learnt: the art of technical story telling from him, and the art of making friends from our regional boss. These traits have stayed with me, for good. My tenure as a sales engineer was eventful; I was told, “If you find a smoking chimney, that’s our customer,” which worked—except when I bumped into foundries and brick kilns! Sales engineer days were heady. I was astonished by the respect we got; customers listened to us and relied on us for solutions. That expectation made me responsible and motivated me to keep learning to meet customer needs. My customers have truly shaped my career! Forbes Marshall is an organisation where “responsibilities are taken, not given,” which is a great enabler for growth. You show interest, start delivering, and it becomes your role. My journey began as a sales engineer; I now manage key accounts and corporate marketing. At every step, customers have taught me something, and the organisation has shown faith in me.
