Our Session at the 13th UN Forum in Business and Human Rights in Geneva, reflected on the pressing need for #CSDDD and #HREDD to include diverse aspirations, needs and development contexts of all stakeholders throughout the value chain, including knowledge of the regulatory landscape in production countries.? Companies need to "develop a worker- and community-centric architecture, which takes account first and foremost of the local context.” Partners in Change (PiC), Southern Voices for Global Development, Praxis Institute for Participatory Practices, Sustainable economic development @ Dutch MFA, Shift Project, UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights

"The meaning in meaningful engagement." The second of my round-ups from the UN Forum and Business and Human Rights 2024, addresses how stakeholder engagement by companies is redefined in the new era of mandatory human rights due diligence. In the article, I ask: * How engagement challenges for business are fundamentally changed by the new laws. * How large companies can 'rebalance' power imbalances with their local suppliers and communities? * Is it purchasing companies themselves who are most in need of capacity-building? * Who sets the agenda? Meaningful stakeholder engagement was a running theme in sessions throughout the Forum. Check out the latest ideas in my blog published by Sustainable Brands and available now at: https://lnkd.in/deTZeUYQ This is the second of my three blogs from the UN Forum in Geneva. Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, these round-ups are being published this week. The third and final article - on what investors were saying at the Forum - will appear shortly. The Power of Stakeholder Engagement in Policy Making ???? Why does it matter? Effective policies thrive on diverse voices. By engaging stakeholders, we ensure that the needs and perspectives of those affected are not just heard but integral to the process. Diverse perspectives lead to better solutions! When government, businesses, NGOs, and citizens collaborate, we tackle real-world challenges from multiple angles, creating robust policies that truly work for everyone. Involving stakeholders enhances accountability and transparency, building trust in the policy-making process. When key players feel heard, they’re more likely to support and help implement these policies. Avoid policy failure by identifying potential roadblocks early. Stakeholder engagement minimizes costly mistakes and backlash, paving the way for smoother implementations. Collaboration is the key to long-term success! Inclusive policy-making ensures that our solutions are sustainable and adaptable to changing circumstances. Let’s champion stakeholder engagement for a more inclusive, effective policy landscape! #StakeholderEngagement #PolicyMaking #InclusivePolicies #Collaboration #Accountability

A week back at our desks post the annual United Nations 13th Forum on Business and Human Rights, and here are our some of our key takeaways: What a privilege to witness and be part of the energy in the room! The Forum showcased the power of a platform for engagement, discussion, and debate which accommodates in one place the diverse perspectives of rights holders, civil society, investors, governments, and business. We felt as though we are witnessing a paradigm shift in the field of Human Rights, moving beyond normative voluntary frameworks and good practice principles to a future of mandatory requirements and hard law around due diligence, disclosure, and reporting on human rights risk and impact management - with laws like the EUDR and CSDDD driving accountability. The enduring relevance of the UNGPs as a framework to analyse human rights risks in complex supply chains was a recurring theme, even as we navigate new and awaited legislations. Whilst large corporations may have come a long way since the UNGPs were introduced, there is still a big difference between what sustainability teams are communicating and how their procurement teams are operating. Understanding the impacts of purchasing practices is key to unlocking meaningful engagement in value chains. Without it, lots of the work sustainability teams are doing may be lost. A message that was driven home at every session was the importance of effecting meaningful stakeholder engagement. Rightsholders should be shaping the programmes that businesses are creating, not just providing feedback on them. Supporting our clients to tackle the practical challenges of transposing and implementing policy and guiding frameworks by embedding respect for human rights robustly in their businesses, portfolios, and supply chains lies on our horizon for 2025 and beyond. Many thanks to the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights for organising this insightful event. #UNForumBHR #bizhumanrights #esg

Join our introductory webinar on integrating business approaches to human rights and the environment?on Wednesday, May 15th from 14:00 to 14:30 CET / 13:00 to 13:30 BST ?? Environmental harms and risks to human rights are intrinsically linked. In that spirit UN member States recognized the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment as a human right in 2022. However, we see that many companies are struggling with linking their environmental and human rights risk management and related sustainability agendas.? ?? In this webinar we will explore the?interconnections between protecting the environment and respecting human rights, and what steps companies can take to address these agendas in an integrated way. We will look at the benefits of implementing #humanrightsduediligence (#HRDD) in relation to different types of #environmentalimpacts and how this is reflected in upcoming legislation and initiatives. We will highlight how business practitioners can bring together the environmental and social impact agendas by using an HRDD approach and suggest ideas for how to start conversations within the company to break down silos and build support for integrated approaches to these complex challenges.???? ?? The webinar will be moderated by Gwendolyn Remmert, Co-Founder and Director of Sustainable Links.?? She will be joined by Meki (Mercedes) Nattero, Responsible Business Consultant Human Rights & Environment and Madeleine Koalick, Co-Founder and Director of Sustainable Links who will provide insights from their #HREDD implementation work with companies across many sectors. ? ? Please register for participation via Teams here: https://lnkd.in/eTxzsVHr. Feel free to contact us should you encounter any difficulties during the registration process at [email protected].? ??
