Green Skills are in demand. We need to train more people. But how about hiring those who already have green skills? Here’s how: 1. Most life science-trained scientists already possess green skills.They might not have extensive work experience, but I guarantee that their training equips them with up-to-date scientific knowledge. These candidates can quickly adapt and cover your needs. 2. A scientist trained in one biology field can excel in another.*Example: a botanist can assist with insect research, a zoologist can contribute to biotechnology projects, and a microbiologist can support chemistry. The transitions between social, biological, and mathematical sciences are less straightforward but still possible. 3. If you need a ecotoxicologist and can’t find one, recruit a molecular scientist. Make the decision based on their soft skills. People can learn. Give them a chance. 4. Hiring for management roles requires care, but good managers know how to handle people first. For technical jobs, domain knowledge is key, but remember: people can learn. 5. Several #postdocs = senior manager in industry. These individuals have sacrificed financial security for the sake of Science. They will thrive on your team. Give them the chance to gain business acumen and navigate science with you. The return is immense. 6. Biologists have an incredible ability to connect fields. Their training in species classification makes them agile professionals who can bring balance and a comprehensive view to your operations. They can evaluate environmental risks around your production—a valuable skill for assessing both staff and environmental safety. 7. Life scientists are adaptable by nature.The breadth of topics they master means learning is embedded in their DNA. Postgraduate-trained biologists have exceptional capacities to absorb new information. 8. Be open to having serious conversations with candidates about flexibility across fields and business needs. Encourage them to align with market fit. How? Ask them to understand regulatory requirements and market trends. Have them pitch potential growth opportunities and how their biological knowledge could enhance risk management and value along the supply chain. 9. Evaluate candidates based on their communication and content production. This is as important as their personal branding, which reveals their soft skills and how they present themselves professionally. 10. Don’t limit yourself to traditional cover letters. Offer options for video pitches or creative submissions. A technical CV might hide special human talents that shine in other areas of their lives. Don’t have time to manage the hiring process? The best person to hire a scientist is another scientist. But that’s a problem for companies looking to bring on a CSO – if they already had one, they wouldn’t be hiring. So, how do you vet a CSO when you’re not a scientist yourself? One (of three) essential components of finding a successful CSO is being able to evaluate candidates' experience and track record. Here’s how I would do it: First, I'd look for a blend of academic and industry experience. Your candidate should be comfortable in both worlds, with both academic credentials and hands-on industry experience. Next, evaluate their publication record. Not just how many papers they’ve published, but where they’ve published and the impact of their work. (High-quality publications in reputable journals are a good indicator.) Learn about their experience in translating research into business outcomes. Your CSO should be able to turn scientific findings into actionable business strategies- ask them for examples of how they've done this in the past. And don’t forget to ask about their ability to secure funding or partnerships. A good CSO has a track record of obtaining grants or building strategic partnerships.
