?? Applauding the Next Generation?? Last week, we posted a sustainability intern vacancy for our Manufy team. In just 3 days, we received over 100 high-quality applications. This was truly astonishing… over 100 graduates expressed their moral ambition to make a positive impact on the world. It's something Rutger Bregman would be proud of ?? . This overwhelming number of applications got me thinking about what it truly reflects: ?? A new generation with a #purpose: More graduates are driven to work at impact jobs and impact startups rather than climbing the traditional corporate ladder. ?? A call for reflection: for those in my generation and above, we need to ask ourselves – are the companies we work for doing enough to make a difference? How many roles in your company genuinely contribute to a positive impact on the world? ? Demand for impact roles: this influx of applications indicates a shortage of impact internships and roles. We, unfortunately, have to turn down over 97 potential problem-solvers in sustainability. Given the talent we've seen, I'm eager to connect these promising candidates with other sustainability/impact internships. ?? One of my favourite things to happen so far this week - is having an offer accepted for our paid internship this summer with our host company Kana Earth. Every year Above and Beyond - Climate Tech Recruitment hosts a paid internship scheme with two key objectives: ?? Helping an awesome ClimateTech start-up by paying for an intern to join them for 12 weeks over the summer. ?? Helping an intern from an under-represented group to gain 12 weeks' valuable experience in the climate sector. This year we chose Kana Earth as our host company - because we love the work they are doing to divert capital away from fossil fuels and towards nature-based carbon removal projects and regenerative agriculture. ? We sent a shortlist of our 6 strongest applicants for interview. ? Of which 3 were taken to final interview. ? And our successful intern accepted their offer at the start of the week. We can't wait to see how they settle into the team this summer and hear all about the work they'll be doing! ?? In the meantime.... ?? The Climate Intern Network by Voiz Academy?? I’m delighted to launch a new asset for university and early career climate jobseekers. This network has been born from hundreds of conversations we’ve had with young people excited to start their careers in climate but who don’t have access to networks of young professionals and other students who have landed internships and graduate positions in the sector. This ecosystem will centre around a database of internships, spring weeks, apprenticeships and graduate roles in climate and sustainability completed by network members. You can use this database to discover roles and how people landed them, and even connect for mentorship by members who took them. We already have 50+ experiences in the database including Clean Transportation Interns, Sustainable Banking Analysts, Environmental Advisor Graduates, and Zero Waste Analysts. My Internship Experience (Part 1/3) I am thrilled to share my incredible journey as a Business Analyst Intern at Turning Point Consultancy Services. This internship has been a significant learning experience, allowing me to delve deeply into the world of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and its pivotal role in today's business landscape. ?? Induction and Onboarding: My journey began with a comprehensive induction, where I was introduced to the team, the company's vision, and its commitment to driving sustainable business practices. ?? Research on ESG Reports and Scope Emissions: One of my initial tasks was conducting in-depth research on ESG reports and Scope emissions of allocated companies. This research was instrumental in broadening my understanding of ESG, its impact on businesses, and the critical importance of sustainable practices. ?? Presentation Creation: I had the opportunity to create detailed presentations on ESG. This not only enhanced my analytical and presentation skills but also allowed me to effectively communicate complex ESG concepts to the team. ?? Job Simulation: Under the guidance and recommendation of my mentor, I participated in a job simulation 'BCG Climate and Sustainability' focused on Scope emissions. This hands-on experience was invaluable in applying theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, further solidifying my understanding of ESG principles. ?? Equipped with ESG Knowledge: By the end of this internship, I feel well-equipped with a comprehensive understanding of ESG concepts and their significance in today's business environment. This experience has fueled my passion for sustainability and responsible business practices. I am immensely grateful to my mentors and the entire team Turning Point Consultancy Services for their support, guidance, and for providing me with such a transformative learning experience. I am excited to carry forward this knowledge and make a positive impact in the field of ESG. A constructive piece of advice for someone just starting as a Sustainability Analyst is The sustainability sector is dynamic, with new technologies, policies, and practices emerging regularly. Actively seek out diverse perspectives by networking with professionals from various fields, as this will broaden your understanding and enhance your effectiveness. Pursuing internships or volunteer opportunities will provide you with practical experience, allowing you to apply your knowledge in real-world settings. Additionally, prioritizing the development of strong analytical skills is essential, as these will empower you to assess data effectively and make sound recommendations. Embrace the learning journey, and you'll find great opportunities for growth in this impactful field.#sustainability #SDGs

**A Question… or Maybe a Rant?** Transitioning into a new field, even within the broad area of sustainability, is not easy and requires genuine effort. In the job application process, there is often a clear requirement for practical experience—experience in real-life roles with tangible projects and case studies. While certifications and courses can enhance theoretical knowledge (which I am grateful for), they don’t replace the need for hands-on experience. To gain this experience, one option is to apply for internships or volunteer positions in companies that align with your interests. This approach allows you to learn the ins and outs of your desired field and the organization. Here’s my question: internships are typically targeted at students who have just graduated or are nearing graduation. As a 36-year-old looking to enter a new field without practical experience—despite having knowledge and experience in a related area—how can I effectively apply for internships? At times, I find myself being considered either overqualified or underqualified, depending on how my background is perceived about my new interests.
