You know why I didn’t do any internship until my 2nd year. Because why would anyone hire me without any skills? 5+ years and our feelings as freshers to college are still the same. Let me tell you I was wrong and you do not have to be. If your skills feel like a roadblock to you too, here’s your way around it. 1. Start with an HR Internship HR internships are relatively easy to get and most of them are remote—so you won’t have to worry about attendance! Sure, a lot are unpaid, but they’re a great starting point for building experience. 2. Try a Research Internship Reach out to someone in your area of interest—whether it’s finance, marketing, or anything else. This will add a ton of value to your profile even if you do not want to join academia later. 3. Use Summer Vacation Wisely Those two months of break? Perfect for an on-site internship. (also you won’t have to worry about your attendance) 4. Focus on Upskilling & Competitions When you’re worried about attendance then certifications, online projects, and case competitions can be your way to stand out cuz they interfere with nothing. As a job seeker in my field, I urge employers to give us a chance. Many of us are quick learners who can easily adapt to new environments. Some of us are highly qualified, yet no one is willing to take a chance on us. Employers often require candidates with 3-10 years of experience, but when we apply for internships, we're told that internships are not available. It’s better to bring in fresh talent, allowing the outgoing employees to mentor us before they leave. This is feasible, especially since departing employees often give a one-month notice. That period could be used productively to train new hires, benefiting both the company and the new employee. I believe if someone has the necessary educational background for a career, they can quickly learn the required skills. Some of us would even be willing to work for that one-month period without pay just for the opportunity to gain experience. Please, employers, give us the chance.
