For our Summer Research Symposium on July 10, we hosted a panel to discuss applying for grants and fellowships. Takeaways? 1. If you're getting ~14% of the grants your apply for, you're applying for too few. If you're getting less than ~7%, you're applying for too many! (Diluting your attention and quality) 2. Keep trying - panels can see that persistence, and often award people who tried before and improved, or if it's their "last chance" (graduating, getting tenure) 3. Apply for what you're excited about--it makes the grant easier to write, and your enthusiasm shines through 4. There are offices at your university like National Fellowships and Sponsored Projects that are there to help you make great applications. Get to know them! Dr. Seuss said, "Oh, The places we will go!" ... Looking forward to addressing the undergraduate interns of the 39th Annual Massachusetts Institute of Technology Summer Research Program (#MSRP). I first addressed this program in 2006 as a professor at Tulane University. The MSRP seeks to promote the value of graduate education; to improve the research enterprise through increased diversity; and to prepare and recruit the best and brightest for graduate education at #MIT. Students who participate in this program are better prepared and motivated to pursue advanced degrees, thereby helping to sustain a rich talent pool in critical areas of research and innovation. The online training course "Research Impact: Creating Meaning and Value" teaches the basics of the impact of research in #business, #politics and #society. What counts as impact, how can it be embedded and considered in every step of the research process and ultimately implemented effectively? The Bonn Graduate Center, the Funding Advisory Service and the Transfer Center #enaCom at the #UniversityofBonn co-developed this program as part of an international group of experts around the leading provider of online training EPIGEUM. The training is part of the Argelander Program for Early Career Researchers, to which all doctoral and postdoctoral researchers have access, but can also be taken by participants at other career stages.
