?? Deforestation strongly contributes to biodiversity loss and climate change and threatens the livelihood of local communities. The European Union's Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is a pivotal step in the fight against deforestation. It aims to stop this destructive practice through rules on imports of commodities with heavy deforestation risks, including beef, timber, soy, palm oil, rubber, coffee and cocoa. Recent attempts to delay and weaken the legislation have raised significant concerns. Together with other investors, Triodos Investment Management urges the European Union not to delay the implementation of the EUDR and to ensure that the regulation is not made subject to dilution through the proposed amendments. We believe the EUDR should be more ambitious by including the financial sector. Research shows that over 40% of financing linked to deforestation and ecosystem degradation comes from Europe. These financial flows push ecosystems towards tipping points. It’s time for the financial sector to take responsibility in this global effort. ?? We must act now, because every minute of delay results in a football field of forest being cleared. It is on for the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, often called #Cop 16. I will be on site until October 29 with our CEO Genevieve Morin Morin. What does a financier do at a UN conference on #biodiversity? At Fondaction, we are convinced that the economy will and must be transformed to meet people's needs while respecting planetary limits. To achieve this, finance must change, and it has to do so in collaboration with experts and people in the field, with science and by seeking out best practices, notably in a Cop. Fondaction is also involved as the first Quebec signatory of the Finance for Biodiversity. For this Cop 16, the Pledge calls on world leaders to ensure that the resource mobilization strategy aligns public and private #financialflows with the goals and targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Framework. The Climate Investment Funds has just endorsed over $71 million for nature-based solutions in Ethiopia and Zambia. ???????????????? gave the world the Arabica coffee bean. But perhaps less well known is that 45% of its coffee comes from natural forests. Or that these forests are gravely threatened. Deforestation is a reality too in ????????????, where 70 percent of the population rely on agriculture for a living, and unreliable rainfall and temperature changes are leading to spiralling food insecurity. What I love about our new Nature, People, and Climate program is that the name says it all. We cannot protect vital ecosystems - like Ethiopia's and Zambia's carbon-rich forests - without involving the communities who live in and depend on them. And rural communities need flourishing natural environments that can provide sustainable livelihoods, even in the face of climate shocks. These two plans from the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment - Zambia, Ministry of Agriculture, Ethiopia, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia , Mike Mposha, Ngao Mubanga , and adefires worku, developed with the African Development Bank Group and The World Bank Group, reflect that complex interdependence. They are full of thoughtful initiatives, from carbon credits and reforestation efforts, to supporting women-led collectives, expanding access to green technologies, and encouraging farmers of sustainable products like honey, bamboo, spices and coffee.
