It is with great joy that I can share that I've joined the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) as a Researcher in the Energy, Climate and Environment program! Here, I will work on assessing present and future energy needs to ensure a Decent Living for all, across different socioeconomic and climate change scenarios. I am eager to contribute to the development of just transition pathways and help understand how the fundamental services for meaningful living can be provided to everyone, with the lowest possible environmental impact. We live in a world where billions of people lack the energy to meet essential needs, while in high-income countries an enormous amount of energy is wasted on goods and services that do not actually contribute to our prosperity, as individuals and as societies. Reducing our energy consumption (and thus our greenhouse gas emissions) while giving billions of people the opportunity to escape poverty will be a crucial challenge in the decades ahead. And I am eager to contribute to our collective understanding of possible solutions. But how can we ensure that these insights are not only heard but also understood and implemented? ???? On June 26th, Energy Evaluation Europe hosted its fourth Lunch and Learn session online. For this intense and interesting discussion Joel Franklin welcomed esteemed panelists Gesche Huebner and Carine Sebi to delve into the question: “How can evaluation insights respond to and inform public debates about the energy transition?” Key discussion points included: ?? ?? Exciting news from the Australian Research Council (ARC)! Today, the ARC announced over $342 million in funding for 536 new projects under the 2025 ARC Discovery Projects scheme. The ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S) announced that twelve of the funded projects feature contributions from its members, highlighting our commitment to impactful, multidisciplinary research. One such project,?Embedding Net Zero Carbon Emissions in Northern Australia, has received funding and brings together an outstanding team of researchers: Timothy Neale?(Deakin University) Kari Dahlgren?(Monash University) Matthew Kearnes?(UNSW) Tess Lea?(Macquarie University) #ChristopherMayes?(Deakin University) Gisa Weszkalnys?(The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) Their project aims to explore how people in northern Australia perceive the local, national, and global significance of large net zero carbon emissions initiatives. By examining the social factors shaping the integration of net zero paradigms within industrial infrastructures, the team expects to uncover critical insights into how climate change policies are evaluated on a local scale.
