As part of the UN Millennium Fellowship, our project Ekatha Unnati focused on SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, with a mission to empower the Kani community, an Indigenous community in Kerala. Ekatha Unnati, meaning unity and progress, became a journey of advocacy, education, and social justice. We visited settlements in Amboori and Kottur, conducting legal awareness sessions, health workshops, and book donations. Our engagement with the Moopan, the community leader, gave us invaluable insights into their culture and challenges. Collaboration with local leaders and Geethanjali NGO was key to adopting a holistic approach for sustainable change. This journey strengthened our leadership, coordination, and empathy as we worked towards lasting empowerment. Our commitment to Ekatha Unnati continues beyond the fellowship, driven by the hope of true equality for every member of the Kani community. A Call to Big Hearts: Empowering Small NGOs for Greater Impact In 2023, Ianata Foundation embarked on a heartfelt journey with a simple dream: to serve the poor and needy with whatever resources we could muster. Starting with limited means, we hoped to find support from generous Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, believing there were compassionate hearts out there ready to champion our cause. However, we soon faced a common hurdle: the demand for three years of audit reports and evidence of significant impact before receiving support. As a young NGO, we may not have the extensive track record that larger organizations possess, but our commitment and the needs we address are no less critical. Our work in Kolar District, Karnataka, and Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu, has already touched the lives of over 1100 individuals, yet there is so much more to be done. Our resources may be limited, but the services required in these communities are vast. We see the challenges, hear the cries for help, and feel the urgency of their needs. But without the backing of those with the means to support us, our dreams risk fading away. This is where we make our humble appeal to all the Big Hearts out there. We ask you to look beyond the audit reports and the scale of impact expected from long-established organizations. See the passion in our work, the dedication of our team, and the potential for transformation in our projects. Through Tenaga Nasional Berhad's (TNB) corporate social responsibility program, in collaboration with various partners, the Projek Baiti Jannati (PBJ) initiative for new home construction has brought hope to Puan Samsiah Binti Hashim and her family. The NGO sector in India ? Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) refer to highly diverse groups of enterprises engaged in a wide spectrum of non-profit activities. The focus of NGOs can range from humanitarian and rural development to assisting local startups and businesses. There are roughly 3 million of them in India. ? So, What is the Goal or Objective of NGOs? ? The goal of NGOs can vary widely depending upon the specific focus, objective and mission of the organization. From improving human rights in a geographic area to providing education about environmental issues to supporting the arts, the goal or objective of an NGO can cover just about any topic related to improving a region, country or the state of the world in some way. ? What all NGOs share is the desire to further their vision and mission, whatever it might be. Individuals and groups who form NGOs tend to have a passion for their beliefs. They are usually coming from a place of altruism and care for the human race and for the future of our world. To that end, the goal of NGOs is to improve the human experience by lending their efforts to a specific and specialized cause.

This approach overlooks the nuanced, context-specific nature of social interventions, leading to ineffective and sometimes harmful outcomes. Behar argues that this trend diverts resources and undermines the credibility of the NGO sector as a whole.
