Good opportunity for Intership

Why is the cultural heritage field still offering unpaid internships? Do we not value the work of emerging professionals? There is a cost to being an intern. I'm not talking about the institutional cost of hosting an intern, I'm talking about the costs incurred by an intern. Interns have standard bills to pay - lodging, food, utilities, etc.. Some interns also pay for their own healthcare. Other interns are required to do internships for their academic program, and therefore pay for academic credits. Some interns relocate for 1-3 months in order to do an internship, incurring additional relocation costs and potentially having to carry the burden of two rental agreements. In the case of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre internships, interns are also expected to pay for flight and procure their own work visa. These costs add up. How can we expect interns to conservatively pay $5,000+* for an unpaid opportunity? How can we cultivate an equitable cultural heritage field if we undervalue the workers? +It's worth noting that if an intern takes out a loan to cover the costs of their unpaid internship, the cost will continue to rise over time with interest rates. ?? After spending the long weekend sleeping away my week-long flu, I finally had some strength in me to think about my own internship experience. I did three internships before graduating. One was a polytechnic graduation requirement which made me realise the type of work culture I preferred. The second was with TODAY --- which nearly made me swear off journalism because I barely had any sleep during GE2020 but I loved it too much that I'm now doing it full-time --- and the third was with Guide Dogs Singapore Ltd, just because I wanted to do some good over the summer. ?? I thought three was enough, even though they were for different organisations and different job roles. But for a growing number of youths, three is a minimum. However, several experts told me that quality internships matter more to employers, rather than just quantity. I can't help but agree --- I don't talk much about the trips to Starbucks I had to make in one of my stints but always rattle on about how I had to run around Singapore during GE2020 if asked. But at the same time, some internship roles are so competitive that having more names on a resume could just give that chance to be in an interview. What are your thoughts? Dear network, My first internship abroad! As part of my associate degree in International Business, I am looking for an internship abroad??. I am interested in opportunities in the United States, but I am open to other countries as well. The internship will last two months and will start in May. I am very excited about this first experience abroad that is coming soon!?? Here are the requirements I need to complete during the internship: During my internship, I have to focus on three main areas: 1. Develop business relationships in an international environment: I have to manage customer and supplier relationships, coordinate services, and communicate in English. 2. Support international business growth: I have to study target markets, assist with business prospecting, and help with the company’s global development. 3. Carry out international operations: I have to organize contracts, check for risks, and improve business processes. I also have to develop skills like teamwork, and understanding cultural differences in business.
