I really do not like bad data, especially when it informs decisions and is seen as being reliable and standardised-when in reality it's not. So we decided that we would look into what informs the IUCN assessments, given that they are the main species indicator for the global biodiversity framework. We found a shocking lack of transparency on what data is included, and major disparity between the amount of information (publications) included, which was best explained by popularity.....furthermore, almost no evidence of empirical data-use, such as using GBIF to map ranges (which explains why the ranges compare poorly to point based data when assessed) https://lnkd.in/gft3WEy2

While international lists are valuable, most biodiversity action is managed at the national level. Having data systems trusted by national governments and decision-makers is critical. In this panel, we will discuss how various countries have created effective national systems, the dynamics and challenges involved, and ways to enhance collaboration and resource-sharing within countries to develop the most effective national assessment systems. ??
